I was accepted for this upcoming Fall semester and I am going to visit the campus in the coming weeks. I have read a lot and have gathered that most of the students who attend Ole Miss are conservative, more on the preppy side, and party a lot. I know I shouldn't generalize, but as a person who is liberal, not entirely preppy but did attend private school for quite some time, and not a huge partier but still enjoys social events, fit in? If I choose to attend, I do not want it to be super difficult to make friends in an atmosphere like this. I'm just more on the artsy side of things.

Congrats on your acceptance to Ole Miss! You are taking a very important step by visiting soon. To get the most out of your visit, contact the departments you are interested in and ask to meet with someone and perhaps sit in on a class. If you provide a bit more information about yourself (major, interests etc) I’m sure people would be able to help more.

If you generalize, yes Ole Miss is conservative. However, not all Mississippians are conservative. And over 40% of the student body is from OOS. However, not every OOS student is liberal. Can a liberal fit in at Ole Miss? Yes. And they can thrive, become leaders and develop a strong and broad base of friends. As far as partying, again, you will find people that fit your lifestyle.

Though I am a parent, I have watched my DDs journey for the past four years. They had the same concerns as you in the beginning. Their choice to step outside of their safety zone and choose Ole Miss has allowed them to grow as individuals and as global citizens.

IMHO,so much of an experience is mindset and attitude. Ole Miss offers a wealth of opportunty for education, experience and growth. It’s up to the student to take advantage of what the University has to offer and have a truly amazing experience.

Please feel free to continue to ask questions. I know many of us with upperclassmen would be happy to “pay it forward” for all of the help we received when our students were choosing their future Universities. Who knows, a current student or two might chime in!

Hi Painted Faces. I am new to this forum but wanted to ask if you indeed decided to attend Ole Miss? My son has the same concerns you have voiced and will most likely attend Ole Miss in 2015. He would very much like to attend a liberal arts school and we (parents) are looking at the most cost efficient choice. He is more artsy/hipster-like, somewhat liberal, very intellectual, and not into partying. While Ole Miss offers some very interesting academic options (Forensic Chemistry/English Double Major/Cinema (minor), there doesn’t appear to be a social fit. However, we are hoping within a student population of 17,000 or so, he will find some students with like interests. Your insight would be very helpful! Thank you.
