Hi everyone, I got into Penn State, but I decided engineering which I was applying for as a major is not for me. Now I want to study actuarial science at Penn State. Is it possible to change my major at this time? Or do i need to transfer to Smeal College at sophomore year? Please help me... It's really important for me to choose which college to go now... Deadline is coming soon!

Well you should be able to do that. Call admissions and ask if they can switch you. Since you got into the Engineering College, you might be able to switch into the Business school. if not, ask them to put you into DUS (undecided) and you’ll have the same opportunity to pursue that major as the kids directly in the business school.

They may not be able to directly put you in as a business major because of how popular Smeal is, and how many seats they have.

@Etuck24, thanks!

So I called admission office, and they told me that they are not able to switch the college now, but all the students will declare their major at the end of sophomore year. It basically means I’ll need to take the necessary classes and get a good GPA. Hope this helps you guys!

When you go to NSO make sure you tell your adviser you want to get on the smeal track then, becasue they should have told you as a declared engineering major you cannot schedule some of the necessary classes to be a business major

@Etuck24, what do you mean? They told me everyone has the same chance to take any classes though

For example: To enter into a Smeal major you need to have MKTG 301 completed by the end of sophomore year. If you go to http://schedule.psu.edu/search.cfm select fall 2014, university park, university park, then select MKTG 301 from the courses and hit search courses, you’ll see all of the sections of MKTG 301 PSU offers in fall 2014. Notice that under the “notes” category each section says “controls” and when you click on it, it shows you this:

Students who meet any one of the following rows of criteria are permitted to register for: MKTG 301 Section 004 :
College Semester Class Major Minor
BUSINESS 01 - 11
D U S 01 - 11 D U S
AG SCIENCES 02 - 11 AG BM

This means you can only schedule MKTG 301 if you are a BA (undecided) major (business), DUS (undecided) or Ag Sciences major. This is done to allow people who need the class to be able to take it and people not taking it just for an elective and whatnot. This is also true for MGMT 301, ACCTG 211, SCM 301, and FIN 301. All classes you need to enter Smeal.

@Etuck24, oh, this does not look good… What do you think I can still do to fix this? When do we usually get to talk to advisers?

Its OK, you probably wont take anything business specific your first semester anyway, and an adviser can manually put you in classes, but you’ll probably want to get put into DUS in order to schedule these. You’ll meet with an engineering adviser when you go to NSO, but if you talk to them about it they’ll tell you what to do.
