I currently have a 5.1 weighted, 3.97 unweighted. It's my senior year, and I wanted to try something different...I have an injured knee from tennis, and the cutting movements are out of the question.

I signed up to be in the marching band (perfectly good ec, right?) WRONG! Since it's only a few months, it's not weighted as a full class, but you have to have it count...no exceptions. THE HIGHEST grade you can get is a 100 which translates to a 1.5 Yes, I'm not kidding a 1.5/4. Like AP classes are 6.0/4.0, marching band is 1.5/4.0 I'm currently #3 in my class, and this will just drop me to like 10th.

Will colleges notice that my GPA & rank is lower SOLELY because of marching band, or will they wonder why I suddenly had a GPA drop my senior year?

I have another question regarding this. I plan on applying early action (non binding) to UNC (in state) Nov. 2nd. When is the cutoff for GPA? Will they even see my 1st semester grades, specifically marching band? Or will they just see the classes I am going to take?

This doesn’t make sense, as it says that everyone who takes marching band in your score will suffer a GPA drop as the max they can get is a 1.5. Are you sure you have this right?

Most colleges recompute GPA based on their own weighting factors. I wouldn’t worry about it. No way would you penalized for taking band…assuming you have lots of rigourous classes by the time you graduate anyway.

OP - Assume for the moment that you’re right, that getting the top grade in band will drop you from 3rd to 10th in your class. What important life lesson can be drawn from this experience? (And no, it isn’t that life’s not fair — that’s always a given.)

Honestly, I could not care less about my class rank personally; I just want it to get into college.

I love music, and I’m willing to “sacrifice” a moment of possibly giving a speech at graduation for playing clarinet. It will be my first year of marching band, and I think I’ll be glad I took the opportunity.

Whoever designed the perverse grade-weighting system at your school obviously consumed many substances of dubious legality prior to introducing their findings. Most colleges just count core classes in their own special GPA weighting, so you’re probably good.

That weighting system sounds blatantly ridiculous. Are you sure that marching band doesn’t count for a quarter- or half-credit? For example, semester classes at my school only count for 2.0/4, but they’re considered 0.5 of a class, so it doesn’t affect your GPA (i.e. getting an A in five full-year classes and one semester class would result in a GPA of (4+4+4+4+4+2)/(5.5) = 4.0). Nonetheless, ask your guidance counselor; he or she is obviously more qualified to respond to this than the members of College Discussion.

Um… There’s no way the cut-off for GPA is 1.5/4.0 if you’re in NC unless you go to a private school. If you go to a public school and there’s some evidence of this online, I would be happy to inform them they are in violation of state board policy.

You can apply to UNC before semester grades are recorded and UNC will tell you whether or not they are requiring you to report midyear grades.

The highest grade could be a 1.5 theoretically under this system, but band would have to be worth 0.375 credits.

Maybe your school distributes the GPA between marching band and concert band? like 1.5 for MB and 2.5 for CB? Because at my school, if you are in band, you HAVE to do marching band…

It is most likely converted from 1.5 into the 4.0 scale. I took an autoshop class through my local JC and it had a 1.5 credit but I recieved full 4.0 credit. I honestly wouldn’t worry.

taking any elective courses will lower W GPA, because they are not H/AP courses.

Good colleges more like to see UW or recal. hope we 'll be fine.

I’m in band too, my parents force me to quit it next year, they don’t believe colleges will recal:(, and they said it’s hard for band kids to be val and sal.
