hey guys I’m thoroughly confused on how to go through with this.
i attended a canadian university for one year after high school, did pretty bad and returned to the states once i was done.
years later i’m looking to do community college again and hopefully onto state university, and i have previous college credits from high school, and AP scores. they’re asking for my college transcript and i only put the one i attended during hs for dual credit.
i have a huge debt (40k) from the canadian university that had gone into collections already. i cant request a transcript from them due to this… do i still have to provide a transcript??
how should i go about this if that’s the case? i cant pay off 40k within the time i want to return for the fall, and i dont have anything in canada whatsoever, just attended school, opened a debit account that i closed after returning. i dont have a social insurance number there, nada.
how do i get this transcript? how do i continue education without it?
Do you have parents? I cannot imagine that this loan is just in your name. Canada allows some US kid to borrow money?
I only have 5k in federal loans from fafsa… apparently having proof of some form of payment allowed me to register for classes. i wasnt allowed any loans in canada, the fafsa is in my name and i was originally promised parental support for paying off university, though it never came through fruition and i was left with this
So Canada took a big IOU LOL? Pinky promise? You are a US citizen, right?
So, which Canadian school?
im a natural born us citizen and attended uoft
Yes, you have to send the Canadian transcript.
There is a national college clearinghouse, and they do work with some international colleges. The problem is, you don’t know which international colleges they work with and which they don’t.
It would look exceptionally bad if your US college found out about your previous college from someone other than yourself. And it may not be just the CC that discovers it, but your 4-year might. Arrange a payment plan with the U of T and get your transcript sent.
do you suppose i could ask for the transcript whilst on payment plan, or would I have to have it cleared in order to receive it?
They won’t give you the transcript until you’re paid in full.
The collections people own your debt now, have you spoken to the school?
Also, you talk in years, I am not sure any HS credit will work for you now, so don’t rely on that. You can attend your CC without the UofT credits, you just want them to transfer. Make sure they even would.
You will need the U of T transcript if you want to get an AA or AS degree from your community college. You are obligated to give the CC all of your college transcripts if you are a degree-seeking student. So pick up the phone. Call U of T. Start the process to sort out your debt with them.
If, on the other hand, you are enrolling in a non-degree program of study at the CC in the continuing education division such as automotive training or a carpentry certificate, then you won’t need any transcripts. You also will finish sooner and have immediately employable skills that will allow you to get a job and pay off U of T.
