Davis is an amazing university and I’m having an unbelievable time here. Be prepared for an unforgettable ride as you get your dorm assignments, then go on to meet your roommates, and spend the time of your life as a freshmen. Go to all the sports games, which are a blast, and take part in IM’s which are too much fun to be free. Hearing the bell tower toll while you’re relaxing on the beautiful green quad with all of the students lounging around and playing frisbee on a beautiful sunny day is one of the most euphoric feelings.

A lot of us are studying for finals right now so we are pretty flooded w/ work but I’m glad to have checked in and come upon all the Davis prospects.

Once again, congrats to all the new admits and good luck in making your decisions!

[EDIT]I can also try to answer any questions you may have about the school.

Thank you for the welcome message. I am so far very impressed by the way Davis handled their admissions notification process...no glitches getting the info on-line, even the finaid package is there already for my d, unlike many other schools. I also like that the admissions rep had a presence on this board. Seems like a very friendly and responsive place.

I'm curious as to how good the history/environmental science/environmental policy departments are. Thats what I want to major in, and I'm considering Davis since they gave me an almost full ride.

Welcome aboard everyone! UC Davis is an amazing university - trust me when I say there is no better undergraduate experience in all of California. Congrats to all and I'll see what I can do about answering your questions as well.

koolaznpygmy,

If your prospective major has the word - or anything resembling the word - "science," asume the department is strong, so looks like you're covered with environmental science/policy. I haven't taken a history class, but my friends who have have been impressed. There's some very well-respected professors in that department - maybe these links can be of assistance:

megathunder, that was the nicest welcome! Although I didn't make the cut, for those who did and haven't gone to visit -- you will be in for a very nice surprise. I loved it up there -- maybe grad school for me!!! Congrats all who DID make it!

Thanks wecandothis, my major is biochemistry.

To change majors within the same school is not a problem, as far as I know. Simple documentation will take care of that. As for switching majors into a different college you have to meet the minimum requirements of that college, and there may be a specific time period in which you have to do that(as in only after your second year or a certain amount of units) - again, I'm not sure of the time period exactly.

The English department is very strong. I've taken one composition class and one comparative literature class and the two professors have been from very exotic and interesting walks of life which brought two distinct styles to my lectures. I really enjoyed them and can't wait to take my upper division requirement to be taught by advanced faculty.

On the topic of faculty, since my major is biochem I wasn't too familiar offhand with English department faculty so I went and looked around and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Apparently our faculty is filled with pretty brilliant professors from schools such as Yale, Brown, Cambridge, UChicago, Duke, Columbia, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, Oxford, and Northwestern. Pretty amazing!

Thanks beatchick, good luck with wherever you end up!

I second megathunder's comments about the English department. I applied as a communication major - I want to be a journalist. After taking a couple English classes, I now plan to at least minor in English, maybe do a double major depending on how my other minor (Contemporary Leadership) goes.

Switching majors really isn't a problem from what I've seen and heard. Changing within your college pretty much means filling out one paper at the old major, one paper at the new office, and you're set. If the major is impacted or if you wish to switch colleges, you'll have to meet a certain GPA first, but the numbers are reasonable.

You should be excited!! UC Davis is amazing - I love answering questions about our school...plus it allows me to put off studying for finals hehe.

I was wondering if someone (like me, haha) from mostly urban areas would have problems/or ease adjusting to Davis? I've heard that it's really rural...

I got accepted!
But I've never been to Davis. I am from the Bay Area though.
Can anyone give me some more info on UC Davis, both the area, the social aspect, and the academic aspect?
Thanks!
