On-campus audition versus submitting DVD

We could use some advice specific to auditioning on-campus for Muhlenberg, versus submitting a DVD.

I know that an audition is not required to be admitted to the Theatre program, but can help, and an audition is required in order to be considered for a talent scholarship.

We are scrambling to try to schedule auditions/college visits for a LONG list of schools. DD doesn't want to miss more school than she has to - she has a heavy academic load, plus performance commitments. Scheduling travel (especially to east coast schools) takes a big chunk of time. She will be attending Chicago Unifieds, which allows her to audition for some schools that we can then visit over her Spring Break in March. Unfortunately, Muhlenberg's auditions have to be completed by Feb. 28 (and they don't attend Unifieds.)

Does any one have experience with whether or not a DVD audition is a viable option, especially for scholarship consideration?

Thanks so much!

Given that everything we have heard about Muhlengberg indicates that this is one of those schools that cares a lot about demonstrated interest I would guess it would be a bad idea. Would it be allowed? I doubt it, but you could always call and ask them.

On their website they say that if you live more than 200 miles away, you can send in a DVD.

But I know that when we did an on-campus visit at USC last Spring Break, the representative from the theatre department said flat-out that they had NEVER accepted anyone for the BFA program that sent in a DVD. (Which makes me wonder why a school even states that it’s an option if it truly isn’t, but that’s a topic for another conversation . . . )

And then there are schools that ONLY accept DVD’s…seems odd

FWIW - my D applied to Muhlenberg last year and had planned to do an in person audition in late January for RD consideration. A snow storm and rescheduled finals changed our travel plans and we ended up not being able to visit and do the in person interview/audition. We live about an 8 hour drive away (so well outside the 200 mile radius they reference on their website). She called the school, explained the situation and sent in the DVD with monologues that she had done for arts supplements to other schools.

She ended up being accepted with both academic merit aid and a small talent scholarship.

Admittedly, her academic stats were well above Muhlenberg’s 75% percentile but just wanted to put out there that it is possible to get accepted RD, with $ and without visiting.

Muhlenberg, more than any of the thirty schools I looked at with both kids, values getting to know their potential students. I understand your situation and would suggest you speak with your local or regional representative and make sure that at the very least you interview with that person. Then, if you can schedule a visit over a break or a holiday it would probably help… Best of luck with it!

My D is also applying to Muhlenberg this year and she already had her on campus interview and audition a couple of weeks ago. We don’t know the results yet, obviously. But she was in the room with Professor Richter for over 20 minutes. Two monologues and a song and then a lengthy interview. If you go the DVD route, you miss the opportunity for the interview part.
