On-line Macroeconomics class for Kelley?

My D is a sophomore in Kelley. She is considering studying abroad junior year. The Kelley study abroad programs require Econ E 201 and Econ E 202- Macroeconomics be taken before going abroad. She is considering taking a macroeconomics class on-line this summer 2016 and will need the 3 credits to transfer to IU to satisfy the E202 requirement.

Does Ivy Tech have this on-line macroeconomics class in the summer? Any other schools where someone has taken this on-line class and successfully transferred the credits to IU? Any insight is appreciated.

My daughter did this. She took on-line macroeconomics this past summer through our local community college, and is studying abroad this coming spring. I think she needed to provide proof of enrollment in the summer class, but she didn’t have any problems. She should mention this to her advisor and the advisor will tell her exactly what she needs to do to make sure everything is squared away for study abroad. I do not know if Ivy Tech has on-line macro over the summer, but my guess is yes.

Thanks! Anybody else have comments?

It looks like Ivy Tech Bloomington offered this on-line course last summer. It is likely they will offer it again and for the first and second summer sessions, but they probably won’t formally have this on their website until the end of fall semester or beginning of spring semester 2016. A call to them may get you a better sense of what they plan to do.

If you check IU Bloomington’s transfer credit site ( http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/ ) it will show that they give 3 credits for this course. It does not specify if credit is or is not given for “on-line” vs. in class sessions. I am not aware of there being a difference in transfer credit as it is the exact same course, but it sure is worth a phone call to find out.

My D, who was OOS took this same course “in class” session at our local community college over the summer for the exact same reason as stated above and it transferred over. She made sure she had the approval from transfer credit services at IU first, as the community college in our state was not already listed on IU’s transfer credit website. They gave her all the instructions for steps to take to make sure the credit transferred without any issues. It is wise that you are planning ahead.

I know many CC’s do not report online classes as such on their transcripts (not sure about IvyTech).

I took a class online at my local CC and it shows up as just a standard class entry and IU took it for credit without issue. My CC listed the class the same way for both online and standard versions… only the section number changed - just as it does at IU when a section is online.

I have not seen any postings on CC where someone was denied credit for an online version of an approved course at an approved CC, but I agree that you should get it in writing from IU before spending the time and money if you’re worried.

In my case, I called the CC and asked how the course would appear on the transcript before I registered just to be sure I didn’t need to check with IU. The class did show up as approved in the IU credit transfer database before I signed up, so that was never an issue.

As a side note, unless your daughter has taken a course online before or is highly self-motivated, I would be careful with this choice. Of course, sometimes schedules make this the only choice.
