I am currently finishing up finite math online and I really liked the course format (through IvyTech). I know I will take either calculus or microeconomics next summer and I'd like to do it online if possible. If I was able to do that, which course would you recommend taking care of during the summer? Also, is there a limit to online transfer credits? Thanks for your help!

OP,

Only two courses are allowed per Kelley Bulletin.

Credit for Self-paced Independent Study Courses
The Kelley School faculty and staff strongly advise
students to complete all their coursework in the classroom.
The school will, however, accept a total of six credits
of self-paced, online or correspondence independent
study courses toward some portions of the degree.
Because of their basic importance in the degree program,
the following courses may not be taken in a self-paced
independent study format: admission courses, business
courses, I-Core prerequisites, J375, L375, and ECONE
202. In addition, the IU General Education Curriculum
courses must also be completed in classroom settings.

ace550,

However, I believe a “loophole” of sorts applies to this as it is stated below that you make take classes in a “virtual classroom setting” as long as:

A. There is a set semester time frame

and

B. There is active participation between the teacher and student (message boards, discussion boards, etc.)

My only question would then be if the 6 credit rule still applies or not.

For example, I am currently taking ECON-E 202 and MATH-M 119 online due to my hectic work schedule and we have check-ins and discussions on message boards and set time/dates that assignments must be done so I feel like I will be ok and that these credits will transfer. Due to lack of decent advisors at IU I have pretty much been doing my own scheduling, and have yet to been assigned a business advisor, so I went ahead and emailed the general advising department and hopefully they will give me more information to pass along. I hope this new information and person anecdote will help you.

Also, probably most schools do not designate on the transcripts they send to IUB whether the class was taken online. I don’t think Ivy Tech does. They just have the course name/#/final grade, etc., but don’t say on the transcript if the class was taken online.

I would probably take microeconomics or both micro and calculus next summer. Microecon is a prerequisite for G202, which is an Icore prerequisite.

My daughter researched this last year and the 6 credit limit mentioned above is not applicable - it refers to “self-paced” element. She has taken 4 CC courses, 3 of which were online. Credit accepted for all!
