Alright, so I was reading up on SLO’s profile on another sort-of “college profile” website and from what I could gather from the “on-campus housing” and “off-campus housing” parts, a lot of people live off-campus, since “housing at Cal Poly is only guaranteed for freshman, and getting on campus after that is decided by raffle.”

Is this true? And also, can anyone tell me more in general about on/off campus housing? Thanks.

Check-out Poly Canyon apartments for Sophomores and up. They are on campus apartments in a village style setting. Very new and nice! That is where I am encouraging my son to live next year. There are also Cerro Vista apartments. he lives there this year and really likes it. We have not looked into any off campus housing.

Well a few years ago, before Poly Canyon was built, there were problems with there not being enough on campus housing. But now with Poly Canyon, it is not hard to get a spot to live on campus even if you are an upperclassman. I’m pretty sure Poly Canyon isn’t even completely full. There are some empty rooms even now.

My daughter is a freshman at Cal Poly living in Cerro Vista, and is considering her housing options for next year. She’s in the Honors Program, and I’m wondering if she’s required to stay in Cerro Vista, or can she live elsewhere (e.g. Poly Canyon, off-campus apartment?). Does anyone know about the Honors Program housing requirements for sophomores and beyond? Thanks!

your data is likely outdated. With the recent completion of Polycanyon Village, the shortage of oncampus housing is gone. I know some 3rd and 4th year students on campus still.

Your daughter can live in Cerro again if she wants to, or she live in Poly Canyon or off campus. There is a certain section of Poly Canyon that’s for sophomore honors students.

We will encourage our daughter to live in Poly Canyon, instead of off-campus. She is a good student, and staying on-campus will help keep her focused, we hope. Some of her good friends are considering an off-campus apartment next year, but as an architectural engineering major in the Honors program, we’d like to minimize the distractions!
