On survey, Machen rates UF with Harvard, other Fla. schools low

If UF is in the “good” zone then that pushes back FAMU fau fiu to score 0 ;o

IMO, i would rate UF as Strong …“good” does not do it justice relative to so many other schools out there.

“UF probably will fall out of the top 50 this coming year and delusional UF students hopefully will get a reality check.”

5 reasons why that will not happen:

1) Added Tuition Differential revenue

2) Numerous research facilities opening ($388 million dollar Cancer Hospital, the new Biomedical Science Building, the Nanoscale Research Facility, the Research Center at Lake Nona, and the Emerging Pathogens Institute)

3) 36% acceptance rate and the top yield rate for all public universities

4) Amazing athletic success

5) A FTIC class profile that is the best in UF history

Also UF’s latest Capital Campaign has already raised close to a billion dollars and we are only 3 years in. I bet we break 2 billion by the time it is all said and done.

^
Agreed

Sofia doesn’t substantiate any opinions. She voices her opinion yet fails to provide any tangible evidence.

heres the complete checklist incase anyone didnt find it.

VERY funny he marks yale as Strong school then scratches it out.
roflcopter

anyway thats proof that he just filled it out on a whim, shouldnt make a big deal about this…he didnt actually make a relative comparison between his rankings.

basically he put Adequate for any school he didnt really know, and trashed all the florida schools he did know.

NOT ONCE did he check the “dont know” as he should have, unless he actually has a good idea of all those schools, which i doubt. (?)

[another note, he put UWF (university of west florida…yea…?) as higher than FIU, FAU, and FAMU]

I got a substantial amount of scholarship funding plus money from the florida prepaid so tuition and money in general is not an issue. I would much rather be at Berkeley than UF anyday…better weather, more to do, less arrogant people (which is ironic), and I have more opportunities in the Bay Area, especially interning at spinoffs coming out of Berkeley. I got into UF Honors College and did a tour through the campus and was not impressed with the campus and especially the arrogance of the student body. I will give UF it’s football dominance, but everything else is pretty mediocre. It is the best school in FL, but that’s like being the tallest in a room full of midgets. UM is close behind and will most likely pass UF in the coming years.

No argument here:

I agree Berkeley is one of the best univerities in the country. It is disgustingly underrated, and it is almost criminal for the private institions to disrespect a school that has churned out so many Nobel Prize winners and so many other notable scientists.

I also agree the Bay Area is very nice. I currently have an uncle who works in Palo Alto and have nothing but respect for Berkeley. Your only problem is that you guys can not count the UC-San Francisco Medical Center in with your overall research expenditures (even though its just down the road).

I visit NorCal very frequently and the Bay Area is nice but it’s super expensive. Not sure what kind of standard of living requires an income of $200K/year to only live in a shoe box. Those that want to have a nice house and work in the Bay Area live outside of Sacramento but suffer from the LONG commutes.

SSobick, is UC Berkeley adding UCSF’s expenditures with their own???

No they are not and I do not think it is fair.

UC-Berkeley and UCSF work hand in hand (basically are one and the same).

Machen will NOT fill out the USNWR form next year!
OR
He will shread it or mail out the original and keep no evidence.

By the way , SSobick there is NO WAY that UWF = USF & USF.

^ I agree on that point.

If that true, they really get a boost from the medical program/research part of UCSF.

Berkeley and the University of Michigan are everything I wish the University of Florida could be. No matter what the state legislature does I will remain optimistic. The ship is going in the right direction, no doubt about that.

^ I agree. UF needs to keep building its endowment. Already over $1 Billion in the “bank” with the completion of another $1 Billion around the corner.

This is so stupid. They need more than five ratings for schools.

uwf supposedly has one of the best marine science programs in the southeast

Not surprising that UF has been cooking the rankings just like Clemson and USC. I think it is healthy that this thing is finally coming out in the open. Most reasonable people have agreed that the PA is the most subjective and easy to manipulate parameter of all.

All this makes USNews looking pretty stupid and will only make it more irrelevant.

Well, I am sure Maachen’s forgot that with Florida’s Sunshine Law, his confidential memo could end in every newspaper in the state.

[Machen’s rankings ploy is just rank - St. Petersburg Times](http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/article1011155.ece)

^ Wow where have you been the last few days. I would think you would of jumped all over this 3 days ago when the story broke (you know since you think UF is so substandard).

The Peer Assesment needs expanded categories if USNWR continues using it.
It is extremely limiting to rank them 1-5.

You saw it happen often in Machen’s rankings when he gave 2’s to schools such as USF and UCF who had actual PA’s of 2.6 & 2.5 respectively. He always rounded DOWN!

If he had the option to ranking them both at 2.5 noone would be saying anything right now.

They need to rank by .5 increments!
