On the way to Memphis

I just watched my son drive off for the scholarship weekend at Rhodes. It is his first extended road trip by himslef, and that has me wired more than the weekend activities and potential outcome. Oh well, this whole college thing is just one big adventure!

Are the students on spring break at Rhodes? Or is this the weekend they return?

Good luck to son of three, and safe journey!

Thanks so much! I do not think the kids are on break, though I could check. I know that there are student hosts for the finalists, as my son heard from his via email a couple of days ago.

You are near Houston, fireflyscout. Do you like it there? I had really hoped my son would look at Rice, as I have seen and heard so much good stuff about it. Is that going to be too close to home for your daughter?

Wish I didn't always type "himslef" when I mean to type "himself." :)

You made me curious! Spring Break starts at Rhodes on March 23! Maybe it will really feel like Spring by then! (We had a snow day in middle TN on Thursday!)

My kids' spring break starts today, and it's a beautiful sunny day. Daughter is in Galveston, son is playing some mind-sucking game on his computer.

Do I like Houston? LOL - I've lived here all my life. I'm really encouraging (pushing) D to go out-of-state so I'll have someplace to visit! Rice is excellent - my next door neighbor's daughter is a senior there - and in the best part of Houston. Across the street from the museum district and down the street from the medical center. And the band has consistently made the football games interesting. D did consider it in elementary school (when all her friends were caught up in being either UT or A&M fans), but she's no longer interested - too close to home.

Where's SplashMom?

I think our buddy Splashmom said she was leaving on Thursday to go on vacation! I hope she'll write when she gets back.

I can see your point about wanting to visit some other place, have a change of scene! I have a dear friend who used to live in Houston. She said the driving was pretty wild. I have a 30 minute commute to work and deal with one stop light the whole way! (Of course the nearest Super WalMart is 25 minutes the other direction, though some would say that is a good thing!)

I had to laugh about mind-sucking computer games, sounds like S2. Of course CC has been my own addiction and seems to be worsening as April 1 approaches!!

Ah, but CC is not mind-sucking, it is mind-expanding!

Yea! I have a justification, thanks to you! Actually, my H thinks my school should pay me for all the "off time" I spend learning about colleges for my students at school...would that some might go a little farther afield!

Well, got the word that the scholarship weekend was splendid, fun and very informative! The kids spent a lot of time with their guest hosts, and had a chance to explore Memphis and the college to their heart's content! I am glad he made the first road trip home SAFE and sound!

I'm glad to hear all went well - it's scary sending them on the road like that! Is he still pretty sold on Rhodes?

Hi, he's still awating word from his other colleges, most of which are major reaches for everyone, so we shall see. And we are doing the waiting game on financial aid. He did meet some really nice kids there, and has already been getting calls from one guy who will definitely go to Rhodes.

I look forward to seeing!

I'm back! We've returned from vacation and I am so excited to see the news that has been posted about momofthree's son and his Bellingrath Scholarship! YEA!!!! It sounds like he had a fabulous time and I can't imagine how excited he (and you!) must be. I'm happy to hear he had a safe and fun trip. Sounds like he's already made some friends.

Fireflyscout, I've been to Houston only once, but we had a great time there. We were there several years ago for my husband's cousin's wedding. Talk about a great party! Her husband's grandmother was Mama Ninfa. At one time, her husband owned a place called El Tiempo (I think), but I don't know whether or not it's in business any longer. They have since divorced so I don't hear about him anymore.

Sure is exciting to hear momofthree's wonderful news. Hopefully we'll have good news to share next year, fireflyscout. We'll keep our fingers crossed! Have a great day all!
