Online AP courses?

I'm looking for some reputable online AP courses (to boost my GPA :D). Any links? Thanks in advance.

Johns Hopkins CTY has about a dozen AP distance education AP classes:

A little pricey, and minimum qualifying scores are need on the PSAT.

I know BYU online has a couple, as well as Apex learning. Just google them for links

Unless it gives me a leg up in college admissions, I don't think paying $1000+ is a good investment. Thanks for the reply though.

I've heard Stanford's EPGY is decent (and cheaper too). Can someone comment on that or any other programs for me?

as I recall there are some cheaper online AP courses available. you need to look at whether or not you can get credit at your HS, and whether it would impact your GPA, which seems to be main reason for doing this. My son is taking a AP Bio through Hopkins. Although he will get a grade from Hopkins in the course, the HS will just give him a P/F grade (and credit), and will not effect GPA. Best to check with your GC on what the policies and suggestions are.

I have a LOT of experience- this is my daughter's 3rd year of cyberschool. She is not tied into any one diploma program, so there are many options. It may depend upon whether you want "live" classes that you have to attend, or a more flexible schedule. She has taken AP Eng Lit (soph, didn't take exam- done on block schedule which I would NOT recommend!), AP Bio and APUSH thru Apex (5s in both- very thorough courses). This year she is taking AP Calc AB thru U Miami Online HS (more expensive, but teachers available all day until 10pm), AP Euro hist and AP Psych thru Aventa (a lot of reading and writing). You need to be very, very disciplined. Some teachers will dock you points if you don't stick to your schedule. I have found the online teachers to be much more accessible than "live" teachers; they have office hours and respond to emails promptly.

I believe the Johns Hopkins AP courses use the Thinkwell software, which is excellent. This costs about $100 and is a very complete series of lectures at the college level. They also sell Chemistry, Physics, etc. We have watched some of the lectures, and they are terrific. It would be great for learning the material, but it would not be credited or graded unless you took a course (or self-studied and took AP exam).

Here are some free AP courses. <a href="http://www.ucopenaccess.org/%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucopenaccess.org/</a></p>

Some warnings - my kids are doing the nonAP biology, and they think it is as boring as can be. I am not sure about the other classes. Also, they do not offer support, so if it doesnt work on your machine, tough luck.

Other than that, I would suggest self study - possibly using Thhinkwell (which we also like). Is there any particular class you are interested in?

I took AP French and AP Biology through apex learning. I had a very bad experience with my biology teacher...almost every week when it was time to grade my work, she would come up with some sort of excuse (ie my goats just gave birth, i have a cold, the power is out). So, when it came to AP time, a whole slew of my work, including important final review tests, were not yet graded.

I would also check to make sure that your school will include the grades in your gpa. While I received credit for these courses, they were not computed in my gpa. You should talk to your guidance counselor. Your school may even pay for the class if they pre-approve it and it's not offered at your school.

My kids did courses through APEX and a program in some way at Northwestern.

<a href="http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/learning/%5B/url%5D">http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/learning/</a>
and
<a href="http://www.apexlearning.com/%5B/url%5D">http://www.apexlearning.com/</a></p>

Both turned out very well. The APEX course had and online forum for discussion that seemed like an advantage. It may depend on the course but the Northwestern AP Euro course was very tough and a great experience.
