online ap courses

i googled some free online ap courses today , and did find some .but here comes the question , do i still need to buy some books to prepare for ap tests since there are some free online courses (and also my family is a bit poor ) . i am not sure the online courses are good , 'cauz you know they are free ......
could you give me some advice?

really depends on the online course. Some online courses will give you the complete deal: e-book to replace the textbook and then review materials like quizzes, flashcards, chapter outlines, essay writing guides and so on.

However, most do not do that. Most (95%) online courses are merely a quick review and are not a replacement for the textbook or study books. Also the vast majority of decent online courses are not free. The free stuff is not up to date and the material is not specifically tailored to the AP exams, so you end up learning alot of stuff you don’t need to know. That could result in a major problem when it comes to passing the exam.

When it comes to getting a decent score on the AP exams you need to know exactly what the exam will be testing and how it will be tested. No point practicing true/false questions if those types of questions aren’t going to be tested.

Well, I do know that if you live in Florida there is the option of FLVS. They have at least 11 AP courses open now that are free to Florida students. If you live out-of-state, though, there’s tuition so really it would only work out free if you were in Florida. :/

Wish ya luck, sorry I can’t help any more than that.

what about MIT free online AP courses ?

The MIT courses aren’t actually -classes-. They’re resources for teachers but can also be used for self-study of the classes. Problem is, there are only three of them specifically geared towards AP, Biology, Calculus and Physics. Even then the Calculus and Physics do not specify which of the possible classes they are written for.

yup that is exactly right. The MIT OCW material is decent but definitely not a replacement for the textbook or study books. The MIT OCW stuff is just a class they teach on the campus. From what I’ve seen (in the video lectures) most of the students were going to take future classes on the subject so the teacher went way into detail compared to what was being tested on the AP exam. It was actually more confusing for me.

I would make sure the materials you get are specifically designed for the AP exams, that way you learn exactly what you need to learn.

I’m about to take AP Biology and I’m using the MIT OCW to help me out on my summer assignment. From what I’ve found, it’s not really on the same curriculum as the AP Class. In the MIT Class they do not disscuss plants while in AP Biology, almost half the test is about plants. Definitely buy a book and study from that but Physics or Calculus might be nice, I don’t really have experience with those.

so online ap courses don’t do any help , i have to buy some barron’s ? well, i just wonder if i can use the online resourses better , and how

No, online resources are good but only if they are customized to what you have to learn, otherwise you get a bunch of complex mumbo jumbo that you don’t need to learn.

Free, for-credit, online supplemental courses? I thought they didn’t exist. If you’re talking about non-credit courses, all right. The best one’s are related OCW courses and the listing on Hoagie’s.

Every good site is listed on here.

Are there any online courses comparable to the Florida one in other states?

Practically every state has some sort of public virtual school. Connections Academy, iQ High, Insight, K12 (most popluar, perhaps best), and even Kaplan runs a virtual academy.
