Online Bachelor's Degree

Has anyone obtained a Bachelors’ degree online through a bricks and mortar college? If so, please share the details. With links please.

Thank you!

Well, that is how I am finishing up my BS.

Basically, I am not going to give you any links.

You just have to do the research yourself.

Pick a major and then look up schools you figure you can get into which have an online degree option.

Normally the online degree option will be called, the (your home state) Board of Regents Online Degree Program.

The most popular ones at Accredited Universities have majors that are like Liberal Studies or Professional Studies.

When you have everything figured out. Please call the higher education agency of the school the state is located in in order to make sure it is accredited.

Give me more information, please and maybe I can help you a little bit.

Hi Kaos,

I see you are a new member. So am I. I haven’t finished a degree online yet, but I have friend that finished his B.S. in Computer and Information Science from FSU (Florida State University). You can go to <a href=“http://www.distancelearn.org%5B/url%5D”>www.distancelearn.org</a> to see all of the online degrees offered by the public colleges and universities in Florida. BTW, this website was created by a consortium of public schools in Florida.

Also, there are many B&M schools that have online degrees. Some of them are

PENN STATE
Indiana University
University of Illinois
Rochester Institute of Technology(RIT)
University of North Dakota
Ohio University

This is a very incomplete list, but it should be enough to get you started.

Good luck,
Ken

Thank you for the replies.

Ken, I have looked into some of the schools you have posted. One criteria is that the school has to accept Pell grants for their online bachelor degree programs. I am finding some promising programs but they dont’ accept Pell grants.

MJ, I am not sure what I want to major in exactly. And that is part of the problem. I now have an Associate’s degree in General Studies. Are the Bachelors in Liberal Studies looked on seriously?

I was thinking of majoring either in Computer Science something Inot programming) or Healthcare something (not a nurse). I want a reputable school that accepts Pell grants for its online bachelor’s programs.

You were very smart to earn an Associates in General Studies, because that is basically the bulk of your general education requirements right there.
A BA or BS in Liberal Studies, quite frankly, is more Humanities based and makes things easy for when you go into Graduate level programs at “Brick and Mortar” Universities for Theology and other academic disciplines which do not have a very stringent BA or BS Major requirement. A BS in Professional Studies, however, offers a very fair amount of business related schoolwork where you can earn yourself a fine degree which could lead to a variety of Business orientated jobs.

Well, I cannot help you a super whole lot on that. Except to say that if an online school does not accept Pell Grants and the like, then you should write them off because they might not be accredited.

Please think of where you live. You could very well live in a state that has a University with an online degree option. Trust me, it is far easier and it is of great benefit to your future if you research real “brick and mortar” schools which offer some online degrees.

Kaos,

Have you called any of the colleges to inquire on their online programs? All of the schools I listed are regionally accredited (most of them are state universities). The PENN STATE online website states that as long as you are enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester, that you may be eligible for federal financial aid. I don’t know if there is something in the regulations on PELL Grants that restricts online programs from not having them.

I’m not an expert on PELL Grants, but I know several people that have received financial aid for online programs. I don’t know if any of them had PELL grants.

BTW, you can check if a school has accreditation at the Council for Higher Education Accreditation website at <a href=“http://www.chea.org%5B/url%5D”>www.chea.org</a>. A regionally accredited institution is safe. A school that only has DETC accreditation is not in the same league as a regionally accredited school. Another point, if you are looking into a specialized degree, look for a specialized accreditation. For example, engineering and technology programs are accredited by ABET (<a href=“http://www.abet.org)%5B/url%5D”>www.abet.org)</a>. A school can be accredited by a regional accreditation authority and also have it’s technology program accredited by ABET.

As for the BA degree, I agree with MJ. A BA in Liberal Studies, in my opinion, is not a usefull degree except in certain circumstances. You could, however, get a degree in Accounting or Business Administration from a state university very easily.

Ken

“I don’t know if there is something in the regulations on PELL Grants that restricts online programs from not having them.”

If a school which has some online degree options is totally accredited out the wazoo, then you can fill out the fafsa and see if you qualify for a pell grant and the like.

A red flag for a school which might not be on the up and up is if the school hasn’t a federal school code for the fafsa btw.

I joined this tiny google group a while back for online schooling. I cannot remember the name of the group off hand. There were two posts which were from people who went to diploma mills online and were wondering why they could not get a job at all in the field they studied. It broke my heart because I thought, well, if they went online at an actual University which does not only exist online they would be doing alright, you know?

Please be careful when thinking of going online. I mean, the easiest thing to me is to make doubly sure that the school is legit. It will save you a lot of heart ache later on down the line.

Thank you both. You are a wealth of information.

I have started another thread about a school that I have heard about that seems to meet my criteria. I’m not sure about the bricks and mortar thing though.

I have looked into my state’s universities but for some reason, I wrote them off. I will take a closer look again.

I don’t think you’ll find a Computer Science degree where you don’t do programming. Maybe you’re thinking along the lines of Information Systems or management or something but not Computer Science.

kaos2me, my man, I am only going to state this once…

It will save you a lot to just plainly look into real live g haul schools which have online opps.

I do not like the looks of Thomas Edison, but I live in the South.

Good luck, and please re consider online opps at real live “brick and mortar” schools.

love,

your granny merlin

Thanks for the info about Thomas Edison. Point taken.

Merlinjones, why do you suggest an in state college?

In that vein, I’ve been doing some research. I found this BS that is offered at an instate college.

That is what you should do, my man.

You do not have to worry about anything bad if you just go to an instate college. If you go to a college that is formally accredited and everything, then you are totally in the clear and will do mighty well.

Thank you for all of your help.
