Youngest child is HS Junior this year. Survived Honors Algebra 2 her freshmen year and absolutely hated Honors Geometry last year. This year she wanted take Precalc at a lower track to get a better grade, but now is thinking about taking it online thru BYU. Science is her life and she really wants to take some science AP classes and there is just not enough room in her schedule for that. She probably will take Statistics her senior year. My question – will colleges look down at online Precalc? She is not going to major at anything math related, probably psychology or bio and will apply to smaller Midwestern LAC. Thanks in advance
I would take the class at school. She will need to take math in college and it will help her to have the best foundation that she can, especially if she opts to major in bio.
I would take at school also. Nothing wrong with online or dropping down to regular instead of honors, but how would she have time with the extra AP science classes, etc, and other activities during junior year.
If she is not self-motivated in math, better for her to take it with a live teacher.
Also, biology majors commonly have to take calculus, and psychology majors at some colleges do also. So a good knowledge of precalculus is desirable.
It sounds like she’s not a math kid. Taking Precalc online is bound to be harder than taking it in person. As a Precalc teacher, I vote firmly no.
