I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but how exactly does this work? Would a student have some control in switching his sections if his assigned ones didn’t fit into his current schedule? If the course had only a couple sections, I would possibly have just worked around all the section times in order avoid a schedule conflict arising, but the course on which this note appears (CS 170) has about thirteen different discussion times.

You probably need to ask the department how discussion sections are assigned if not the normal way.
