Online Social Networks

Well, I've had a little drought of ideas for web applications to code in PHP, but today I thought I could have a go at creating one of the top online social networks. Of course, a lot easier said than done, but I've had much experience in these types of projects.

So, currently a very popular one is MySpace, and there's also FaceBook. Now, I'm sure each of these has their ups and downs. Personally, I've never used FaceBook before, and I've used MySpace in the past.

So could someone with experience please compare & contrast the following networks, emphasize the strong points and weaknesses of each, and explain what you would do to improve current online social networking systems?

i like facebook better.

it's safer since only people in your network/people you add as friends can see your information, it's less cluttered than myspace, and it has some REALLY sweet groups :D

I agree with you there. MySpace has too many security flaws which I intend to be non existent in my application. And MySpace pages are some of the most cluttered and ugliest web pages I've ever had the misfortune to view.

I was also considering, instead of editing HTML/CSS code which most teens won't be able to do efficiently, I'd include an editor where you can just drag and drop different sections of your page so you can move them around and essentially do all your page editing from there (of course I'd leave in the option to edit HTML/CSS).

I have a similar idea, but with the objective to be more useful/benefitial to our (the youth of the world) general welfare

and it'd be a physical as well as virtual network

kinda like what colleges do/supposed to do

help with job resumes
job postings
HW help
life talks
regulated debates
group projects
all kinds of stuff

and there'd be city affliates to help conduct "real" meetings/conferences

safety/security would be one of the biggest issues

and yes, I prefer FACEBOOK
I cleared my MySpace

I see, I also thought being able to more effectively customize blog pages and include some space so that documents and certain other file types can be uploaded and downloaded.

love facebook
hate myspace

it wouldnt work for you since you're still in h.s., but a lot of facebook users are complaining about it recently being open to anybody with an email address (i.e. highschoolers) as opposed to before when it was only college students. Theres been talk among college facebookers about trying to set up a new facebookesque site like the original facebook. These older facebook users are also disspointed with the new application options that are beginning to allow myspacetype things like music, top 8 friends, etc.

I think what makes facebook more appealing is that it's less cluttered, and that might be because the basic layout of everyone's page is the same style and that makes it more unified. The layout itself is clear and accessible, stuff like that

another thing about myspace is it's SLOWWW

Agreed. ^

I think I'd puke if I ever saw MySpace's source code.

If anyone else has any more ideas/suggestions just post them here. I'm going to begin coding tomorrow. :)

facebook>>>myspace

have it so everyones page is set up about the same, like facebook with the mini-feed, all your info and stuff, then comments and the like. on myspace having the weird back grounds, along with everything being jumbled makes it hard to find anything

I'd like to maintain being able to customize your page, I'd just like to develop ways to limit how ugly you can make your page. As in how MySpace users tend to clutter their page with YouTube videos, animated GIFs that stretch the page a mile wide, and really ugly layouts. So basically I want users to have a little fun with their page, just not out of hand.

Please code it using AJAX, oh and XML Feeds for everyone and gradient colours!!!!!!

:D

God, I'm such a geek :)

Of course, there's simply no other way.

I don't have either. (Well, technically, my friends took it upon themselves to make me one of each, but I don't go on it) People at my school seem to like Myspace more, or are just on them more often.

I think I'd prefer Facebook more. On Myspace, I always get weird messages and requests from guys. It's disturbing and disgusting.

the only reason i like myspace better is because i know literally 2 people with a facebook. once i get into college, where facebook is a lot more popular, im going to use facebook mostly.

i joined myspace before it became huge though. it was just this little site with a modest number of members and then it exploded. it was insane.

IMO the only reason it's famous is because there's nothing else to compete with it.
