I heard from my friend that the Mellon College of Science only accepted 15% ED last year. I then spoke to an admissions officer who said that this was true and very normal for MCS. Anyone know why MCS is so much harder to get into ED than RD?

No official reason but could be that the applicant pool is weaker for ED and RD. Also other factors may play a roll such as CMU’s expected yield for ED and RD applicants i.e if high rates of students enroll through RD then less ED students may be admitted. Or there may be a history of students backing out of the ED agreement due to financial reasons.

@cortana431, I don’t think the problem is high RD yield. According to the admissions statistics, MCS actually had the lowest yield of all the colleges (14.7%). Doesn’t that suggest that the ED rate would be higher?

It’s all just speculation. It really could just be that the ED pool isn’t as strong as the RD pool.
