Only 19% of UO students live on campus - how's that impact campus life?

Is there a cohesive sense of campus engagement among students, or is campus life somewhat fragmented? Is there anything, outside of athletics, that pulls the majority of the students together?

Golly… well, there is the D-U-C-K-S!!! football team. …oh, right, you said “other than athletics.”

Really, though, it’s a big flagship state university. I don’t think there’s any one thing that pulls the majority of students together… except the shared beautiful campus and the D-U-C-K-S!!! (oops, I did it again)

True, mostly freshmen live on campus, but there is so much housing for students right around the university – really a gazillion student apartments – that the whole area of Eugene where UO is feels like extended campus.

My daughter lived in the dorms her first year and then moved to an apartment just across the street from campus. Funny thing is that her apartment is actually closer to the academic buildings she frequents than her dorm was.

She is not sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but she has found a great community in her major department, her minor department and in the honors college. There are a lot of communities of shared interest that are part of UO. I think most people directly experience the school that way, not in some kind of generalized all-encompassing kind of way… except for the fans of the D-U-C-K-S!!! ;)

It’s a very engaged, spirited campus. If you go for a visit I’m pretty sure you will quickly pick up the vibe.

Cool - Eugene is one of those places that always seemed like it’d be my version of Utopia.
