Here is my current situation. I am a first year student at a competetive LAC. I signed up to take 4 classes first semester and plan on taking 4 second semester.

However, I am not doing well in my foreign language class and am debating whether or not I could drop it. Due to my school's 4-1-4 semester schedule, I would be able to start another language class at a CC during the 1 month short semester and earn some credit.

If I am looking to transfer, would taking 3 classes first semester even though I am going to take a 4th during winter intercession kill my chances? I appreciate all opinions.

Taking one during winter month probably would not make up for taking 3 first semester, because it makes your ability to take a normal courseload look suspect. How badly are you doing? Would it be impossible to raise the grade? Many solid schools accept transfer with 3.3+ GPAs...

I'm not doing awfully. I may be able to get a B- (2.7). But, that might bring down my overall gpa to somewhere around a 3.0 for the semester. Would it be better to get hopefully a 3.5 or up this semester with three classes, then take a language over winter and hopefully get a B+ or possible above or to just take the hit to my gpa and take 4 classes all this semester? I am hoping to transfer to competetive colleges.

I myself am in a tough transfer situation... so I understand. However, if you are having trouble at your current institution, why do you think you'd do better at another competitive institution? Do you not think it would be possible to study enough to get a 3.3+ with 4 courses? In the end, I doubt either scenario would get you into a very competitive institution, BUT I'd say a 3.5 GPA would be better than 3.0. Just a guess though...
