Is it true that you can only use 4 CB fee waivers? :( I was planning to apply to 8 colleges but I cannot pay the application fees. :(

Sadly, I believe so.

But how will the colleges know I used more than 4? Can my counselor just write to them explaining the situation; will they allow me to use more than 4 in that case?

I really need to know...:(

isnt it like 4 UCs and 4 common apps??
and i dont think u can have your counselor do anything about it.

at my school I cant even get a fee waiver, I wanted one but the GC said I had to get either free or reduced lunch to get them (I didnt do the free lunch b/c I didnt wanna fill out the form and I dont eat a lot from school anyway).

Thats pretty lame, I gotta pay over $400 for college APPLICATIONS! Thats more than books :P

really? i thought the fee waiver stuff is independent of the lunch thing. You suppose 2 apply for the fee waivers at the last step of your application...

A lot of colleges waive the fee for electronic filing (there's a list on the "grid" form a the commom app site), and many more will waive the fee if it presents a financial hardship, independent of the CB form. Maybe if you choose which 4 you use the CB waiver for carefully, you can manage all 8.

yeah, I'm applying to 8 schools but only have to pay two fees (without any waivers), since I'm submitting online.

can anyone tell me wat kind of questions they will ask in order for me to get fee waivers for UCs??? I wanna turn in my apps on tuesday, when its all crowded, and would like to have the information before hand.

"at my school I cant even get a fee waiver, I wanted one but the GC said I had to get either free or reduced lunch to get them (I didnt do the free lunch b/c I didnt wanna fill out the form and I dont eat a lot from school anyway)."

Just fill out the form. You don't have to accept the free lunch. Don't throw away $400 for no reason.

S's high school had the same rule about fee waivers. That way, they have some kind of proof that you're low income. This also can help you because your GC can put in your recommendation form that you qualify for free lunches, which would help colleges better undersand your achievements. They know that low income students have more challenges than do high income ones, so if you're doing very well academically, colleges will give you more credit for your achievements if they know you are low income.

It's important to realize that at colleges that are need blind , the admissions office won't know whether you've applied for financial aid. Consequently, the free lunch qualification information that your GC can include can be important particularly for the top colleges that want to attract more low income students.

So I can do nothing about it and only apply to 4 schools? How would they know if I use more than 4?

Try e-mailing the colleges to see if they will waive your fee. Let them know what your family income is.

Where are you applying? Make sure that you're applying to places that have generous need-based financial aid or where you're likely to get excellent merit aid. Otherwise, you may be wasting your time since you appear to have high financial need. No point in applying to colleges that provide less than 100% of students' documented financial need or that provide aid mainly through loans.

Take a careful look at the colleges' financial aid web site, and also look for their common data sets to find out how they distribute aid.

anybody know what the approx. familial income limit is to be eligible for fee waivers??

consider an avg family of 4...

Probably whatever the family income is to qualify for free lunches. You can probably find that out through Google.

Hmmm...

So I CAN waive more than 4 fees?

Ask the colleges, but you'll still have to prove that you financially deserve a fee waiver. That's why it would help to be able to say that you are on your school's free lunch list. Remember, you don't have to take those lunches: Just officially qualify for them.

Well, I'm in the same situation! We are high financial need, because we both qualify for free lunch, PLUS both of us are applying to college at once (virtuoso735 and me). I guess we can just email them or something.

Plus, does Washington in St. Louis and Boston College provide full financial aid?

My family income is less than 15k a year so I'm sure I qualify...yes I get free lunch. I've already started applying to those 8 schools but if I can't get fee waivers...:(

Ask the school for fee waivers. E-mail them, tell them what your family income is, and ask. Provide your guidance counselor's name and work phone number so the schools can verify the info.
