I’m an American citizen going to school overseas. Unfortunately, I’ve been rejected from most colleges and we can’t afford the ones that have accepted me. I only have SJSU left which I should qualify for in-state tuition for so it’ll be affordable for us. However, as I said, my school is overseas and my counselor sent my transcripts and other stuff only recently bec in this country they don’t really know how all the college stuff in the US works. The deadline hasn’t passed however is it foolish to hope for an acceptance since I’m a CS major? What if they’ve already reached the enrollment limit? I just feel like it’s so late… I’m not sure what I’m even asking for here but I just have no idea what to do.
I do know last year there was a similar situation with an American citizen studying overseas and they were finally admitted to SJSU close to the SIR deadline. I would contact SJSU admissions and find out your status.
You can always consider doing a Gap year, beefing up your college applications with some major related jobs/internships and then reapplying to a different set of schools.
How do you qualify for in-state tuition?
Same question, how do you qualify for instate tuition?
Do your parents own a home in California and pay state taxes?
Have you lived and attended school here for the past 3 years?
Contact Admissions immediately.
Unless SJSU replies positively this week, you should plan on taking a gap year.
How do you qualify for instate tuition in CA?
Good to know @Gumbymom However if they reply a few days before the SIR deadline would I still have to accept/decline the offer during those few days?
How do you qualify for instate tuition status?
For those asking out in state tuition. I’m not 100% sure that I qualify for in state that’s why I said “should”. I don’t qualify for the UCs but the cal states are a but different so I’m not sure. My parents have paid state taxes there for the past 12 years. They have California driver’s license, bank accounts, registered to vote(my dad that is), we go there all the time. But I’ve only gone to high school there for a few months and I didn’t mention it bec it was like 3 months. Also haven’t been physically present for a year there. Either way, even if I don’t qualify its ok bec I’ll stay with my parents and siblings for my first year so I won’t pay housing and I should qualify for sure for the remaining years.
I see now that if I don’t qualify for in state then the problem will be that they likely won’t admit me and not me being able to pay… darn it
My parents are dead set against me taking a gap year so I don’t have that option.
Extending the SIR deadline would be up to admissions so you would need to work with them.
Do your parents and siblings currently reside in California?
Why do you say that?
No, California is our home in the US and we move back and force between it and Egypt. If I were to go to SJSU then my family would just stay with me and not move back to Egypt.
It’s a state school right? Correct me if I wrong but It prioritizes CA residents over oos students so would be harder to get in oos and this late too. My grades are pretty good. Equivalent of 4.0 GPA and ranked 1 at my school(of 50 tho so not as impressive as some lol) but my school has a pretty complex school system and that’s another thing to worry about… 75/100 and above is an A at my school as exams are super hard. My counselor said she sent them the grading system but I’m still worried.
Just because a student is or has been a resident of the State of California does not mean that he or she qualifies to receive the in-state tuition rate. Certain requirements, established under California law, must be met.
1. Physical Presence: The student or parent/guardian must be physically present in California for more than one year immediately preceding the Residence Determination Date in which enrollment is contemplated. For example, if a student plans to attend the CSU for the Fall 2021 academic term, and the Residence Determination Date for that term is September 20, 2021, the student must establish physical presence in California no later than September 19, 2020.

2. Intent: California law stipulates the burden of proof rests with the student, and merely living in California for a year does not support a claim for residency for tuition purposes. . . . . . . .
There must be sufficient documentation to demonstrate that intent was established more than one year (a minimum of one year and one day) before the RDD.

California law dictates the requirements for residency at the public UC’s and CSU’s. You would be working with the Residency Determination Officer, at wherever you are admitted, while you re-establish residency and intent in California.
You need to contact the admissions office at SJSU and frequently check your spam folder to see if you are/were admitted.
Well…OOS students are full pay so I am not sure you are correct about this.
@upliiift: Cal states prioritize local in-service area applicants but they also accept many OOS and International applicants since they are full pay as noted by @thumper1. Right now you are considered OOS and until you met the CA residency requirements, you will be paying full fees. CS is also the most competitive major at SJSU.
Alright will let my parents know. Thank you
Oh ok cool. How do I know if I’m considered in state or not now? They have processed my residency documents and now I have sth called “California Voter registration” on my account.
