Hi,

I'm the child of divorced parents. Only my mom completed college, but I do not live with her. What are your thoughts on the first-generation college student advantage, and specifically, does that advantage apply to me? Thanks.

The “first generation” student advantage is weak - and doesn’t matter at many schools. It us strongest paired with a low-income, minority, or disadvantaged background. You don’t check a box that says FIRST GENERATION, you just report your parents’ education levels. With that in mind, you wouldn’t be considered first generation. After all, you are not among the first in your family to attend college.
