OK, so the dust has finally begun to settle. Son’s school play’s performances were last week, and I finally felt the paper part of this audition marathon was almost over but…
Son received his academic acceptance from BSU today, Yay!
Mom realized he hadn’t received an audition confirmation of date and time because the Theatre application had not been sent, boooo!!
This was my mistake as I am the list maker and scheduler. Ball State was one of the first schools my son applied to, and there is a spot to indicate preferred audition date on the application, which my son did. I put information into a folder and son moved on to the next task. It will be a sorry day at my house if it is too late for him to secure an audition date
He completed the Theatre application and it will be in the mail tomorrow. Keeping fingers crossed!

Good luck!! I was always scared that someone like this can happen to me so I always made sure someone else (hubby, kiddo) looked over what I was doing at some point!!! Four eyes is better than two, and we live such hectic lives it’s so easy for seemingly small details like that to just get overlooked if you are doing it by yourself!! I hope things work out though,

Entertainersmom–
Everything should be fine for your theatre application. All of the deadlines for the rest of the auditions are far off, and you should have no problem scheduling an audition! If you want to ensure that everything made it to BSU okay, you can call in the next few days to make sure all loose ends are tied up and that all audition materials are in!

You should be fine - it’s not too late. I agree about the paranoia, though. We’ve stayed up late doing so many apps that they all blur into one. I have a constant nagging feeling that something very important is going to slip through the cracks. I’ve written spreadsheets to keep track, etc., but you all know what I mean…

Thank you all for the words of reassurance. I realized somewhere along the way that I hadn’t written done when a task was accomplished. I had a nagging feeling something was amiss, but as you know, that feeling is constant even when all is OK. Considering he is applying to 12 schools with auditions and three safeties I’m amazed I hadn’t goofed up more often! I’ve moved on from the blaming stage to the acceptance stage!!

OK, so maybe we are a bit nutty - we are applied to 23 schools, with about 12 auditions scheduled so far. Waiting (hopefully) for callbacks on prescreens. Our D has been accepted at Columbia Chicago, which is a good safety school because there are no auditions required until the end of freshman year if you want to step up to the BFA MT program. Still not a top choice, but at least it’s something in her hip pocket. This probably isn’t the best thread for this question, but what are some other safeties?

cheeseheadmike - Check out the Big List of MT Schools for non-audition schools. Son was accepted to Columbia College too, and it is nice to know there is a Plan B before auditions!
Son also applied to University of Rhode Island. It offers a non-audition Acting BFA with the option to minor in Vocal Performance. He also applied to Hofstra, mainly because they kept sending him e-mails to apply free. Wow, 23 schools! Won’t it be great to get to May?!

cheeseheadmike - there was a good thread on this a month or two ago - it was called Whittling down the list or something like that. Link is
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/1527271-whittling-down-list-colleges-safety-school.html

but you can search if the link doesn’t work for some reason. I think it’s hard to find good safeties that you would be happy to go to, but there do seem to be some out there!

Entertainermom: I’m very glad your S is applying to BSU. My D is a freshman BFA MT student there and she absolutely loves it! Getting great training, and there is a real family atmosphere there that is infectious. You have plenty of time to get the application in but make sure he auditions there. He’d love it! And if for some reason he doesn’t get a spot anywhere, BSU would let him start as a BA theater studies major and re-audition for a BFA spot as a freshman.

jeffandann- Thanks for the info about BSU and the family atmosphere. Our D is pretty tough, but we’d hate to think of her spending 4 years under unnecessary stress brought on by personal drama. Some of the programs seem to be a bit high strung to us.

entertainersmom- Have you seen the new dorms at Columbia??? They are like condos, with granite kitchens and views of the city. And yes, we will be popping a cork when this all dies down in May. We’re very happy that our S wants to be an engineer.

cheeseheadmike–my D is at Roosevelt/CCPA right next to Columbia. She loves being in the middle of Chicago, the energy, the many theatre opportunities, so much fun!

If your D’s grades/scores are good, be sure to check out Muhlenberg as a non-audition theatre possibility. There is an admissions interview and an audition for scholarship.

austinmt- Roosevelt/CCPA is also high on our list. The program is highly regarded in the Chicago area, and it is only 1 1/2 hrs from our door. Our D’s high school theatre director is a Roosevelt grad and speaks highly of it. And there is no doubt that Chicago is a great place to be, and a great theatre town.

Though I’ve lived in Maine for a few decades, I’m a Michigander from Ann Arbor and the thought of my son going to school in the Midwest makes the long distance easier to accept. My parents were from Southern Indiana and graduated from Indiana. I have family and friends in Michigan who would be only a few hours drive away if he had an emergency. I’ve never found New Englanders to be standoffish, but I’d love my son to enjoy the warmth and boisterousness of Midwesterners.

Hi everyone!
I am a junior MT major at BSU and an official student employee for the main office of the Department of Theatre and Dance. I am so excited to hear all of your news about auditioning! I knew BSU was where I wanted to go right when I visited. The campus is gorgeous, green grass, trees, brick buildings, and the students were so incredibly welcoming and excited to show me around. I genuinely felt like they wanted me there among them. And I felt that even stronger among the faculty. I could really tell the faculty gave their students individual attention, and wanted each of their students to succeed. And I still believe that 2 and a half years in. My faculty members have taught me more than I ever thought I could know and have given me the confidence and passion I’ve always wanted to live and perform with. It’s obvious they care about their student’s work and well being instead of number of students enrolled or amount of tuition money coming into the department. I just wanted to share my opinions about my time here at BSU and see if maybe I could offer some insight into the life as a student here (:

My son has submitted his application to BSU and will audition for them in Chicago. Honestly, if it wasn’t for CC and the great things we’ve heard about the school from this website, it never would have been on his radar. And, as his list is stating to get smaller, BSU looms larger.
