Hi-
My daughter applied to U Michigan and says it's her top choice at this point. The cost is unaffordable for us as it is. How is Michigan with financial aid awards for OOS? She has very good stats(but not incredible like some) gpa 4.35, SAT 2120 and tremendous extracurricular, leadership and outstanding letters of recomendation. Our EFC will probably be in the $25,000 range (this is a guess).

Their average award is only $8615, COA is about 50K for OOS.
Average award means it includes the loan, grant, and work study job, more than likely.

Hopefully your applicant has other schools that are economically feasible.

UM does give generous merit-based scholarships to OOSs. The top honor is the Shipman scholarship. From my two kids’ experience, I believe your daughter has a good chance to receive a merit-based scholarship, which could bring the COA down to close to Instate.

artspeak…from personal experience…with stats like your daughters, scholarships and grants are possible for the difference between the $48,000 OOS price tag and your EFC of $25,000. That would basically mean that she was receiving $23,000 a year in aid. I would count on funding the $25,000 per year as the University looks at filling the gap but not any more than that. With such a large student body and being in a state that is suffering terribly from the downturn of the economy, we feel blest that we get what we do. My s had very similar stats and is a dual degree candidate in his Sophomore year at UMich. Please feel free to PM me if you would like more details :)

Thanks to all who responded to this post. I feel encouraged for her! to answer eziamm- the school has not given us her unweighted GPA and I don’t know how to calculate it but I do know it’s 4.35 out of 4.6. She had a perfect GPA until junior year when she got a couple of B+'s in tough classes (Physics honors and another). If what you are all indicating, she may be able to attend after all.

My son received the Michigan Tradition Scholarship award. He is OOS. It was for $10K. You can read what it was based on in the U of Scholarship listing. Have your daughter apply for as many scholarships as she can both public and private…it is well worth it since tuition goes up every year and when you approach upper division status. There are also many other fees that you likely did not factor into the number. Travel, lab fees etc.
U of M is a great school…good luck
