What are my chances at getting the Morehead-Cain, Robertson, Carolina Scholar, Pogue, etc.?

I think you have a good chance of getting into UNC, but as for scholarships, I don’t think your chances are as good. Of course the scholarships rely a lot on your essays, your EC’s seem too common (though you have many of them). You are a good applicant but I can’t see anything that would make you stand out and receive a scholarship

The Morehead is looking for people with leadership potential which can be demonstrated by leadership positions in HS. Your overall app looks good for admission and potentially for Davie or Carolina Scholarships but I don’t see examples of leadership in your ECs. The Robertson might be a better possibility. You can complete the supplemental form to be considered for the Robertson but as an OOS applicant you would need to have Admissions send your application to the Morehead Foundation for consideration and I don’t see several of the four basic criteria that they are looking for in your ECs/overall profile.

[Criteria - Morehead-Cain](http://www.moreheadcain.org/page/selection-process1)

[Robertson Scholars: Selection](http://www.robertsonscholars.org/index.php?type=static&source=11)

I am the president of my student body, editor of my school newspaper, and president of the National Honors Society. What other leadership positions could I have? The basketball team hasn’t named a captain, and the Quiz Bowl team hasn’t either.

The criteria for leadership never states that titles=leadership. They are looking for leadership potential. To quote the criteria, “Morehead-Cains initiate. They act and they impact. They influence and they inspire.” I would suggest starting your own service project then, maybe even outside of the clubs.

In addition, since it seems like your school is one of the limiting factors (lack of APs and small, don’t worry my school is the same way haha), try doing something outside of your school’s clubs. During my visit to UNC, I asked about being at a school like yours and they suggested maximizing your opportunities in and out of school. Academically, it looks like you are doing good by doing dual enrollment, so adding more things outside of school (like the service project I mentioned above) will show leadership potential and an attempt at finding more opportunities.

anish

Pre-lives stated it better than I did; titles do not equal leadership. I didn’t see anything in your CV that mentioned starting/organizing/taking the initiative to go beyond what your school offers. Being president or captain is good but they are looking for someone that sees that there is a void and seizes the opportunity to fill it. They want individuals who are not seeking self recognition and who are very humble while being highly accomplished in many things…the four basic criteria point to a very well rounded person.

All I said was I did not see anything that pointed to your being that kind of leader; if I am incorrect then you will need your essays and LORs to illustrate that fact so that the Admissions folks will send your app on to the Foundation for review and consideration.

Thanks eadad and prelives. Both of you gave very good advice that will help me.

eadad, my post was not against you, but it did come off that way, and I apologize. I was just confused when I read, “The Morehead is looking for people with leadership potential which can be demonstrated by leadership positions in HS,” then “I don’t see examples of leadership in your ECs,” but I completely understand what you are saying now. Thank you very much.
