OOS Chances, RD

Rank: school doesn't officially rank, but I think I'm somewhere around the top 15-18%.

Average: UW 92.3, I'm not sure what it is weighted.

APs/Honors: School has limited offerings. Honors English 11th grade, Honors French 11th grade, no APs. My school only offers two for juniors, and neither of them were my best subjects. Senior year I'm taking AP English, AP French, and AP Environmental. Planning to send in a transcript with great mid-term grades in these classes.

ACT: 30 composite

SAT: 2040 composite (750 CR, 710 W, 580 M -- Don't think I want to send these because Math is so awful!)

Lots of extra-curriculars:
- Member of my school's highly regarded theater program for four years, where I acted, directed, sang, dance, wrote scenes and songs that were chosen to be in our shows, and did production jobs.
- Work experience as a waitress and another job as a paid intern at a home-goods company.
- President and co-founder of the club 'Theater For Hope', which raises money for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
- Member of my school's A Capella group.
- Did a leadership and a counselor training session at a YMCA camp (10th and 11th grade), and was a volunteer counselor for two weeks (11th grade).
- National Honors Society
- Member of various clubs like AIDS Awareness, Eco Club, STAND for Darfur

Essays: Really good, I think. I wrote about what it's like to be a triplet.

Also:
- New York School is HIGHLY competitive, nationally well-regarded, and gets lots of love from colleges.
- I would apply to the CAS with a planned Film Studies major.

I'm assuming teacher and counselor recs were great, as well.

“School has limited offerings”
“New York School is HIGHLY competitive, nationally well-regarded, and gets lots of love from colleges”
Are you sure these both are true? They seem to be somewhat contradictory.

Derzillion: New York Public Schools are a bit different course-wise, pending on school and location. I am a product of NY schools-upstate NY. The Regents sometimes hinders what is offered. Many students attend a local college for their higher level courses. However, these schools are still competitive academically. Here in VA it is different, they offer mainly Honors and APs and do not need to adhere to a ‘Regents Diploma’ standard. So what the OP is saying is probably accurate.

Keep in mind that you’ll apply to W&M (not the CAS). All students apply to W&M since no major requires an application so all W&M applicants are in the exact same pool.

Sounds like you’re very involved and that is certainly something we value.

Either you or your counselor might want to explain why you didn’t choose to take the APs offered during your junior year. Even though they’re limited, we might wonder why you didn’t take 1 or both of them.

Any student applying to W&M, especially an out-of-state student, should keep in mind that we are very selective (only 27% of OOS students were admitted last year) so even great applicants aren’t admitted. It’s not that they did anything wrong, it’s that so many students in our pool do everything right and we have to make some tough choices. Any student interested in W&M should apply. You’ll never know if you would’ve gotten in unless you apply and our holistic process ensures that every student gets considered. Just go in with the right expectations. Don’t pin your hopes and dreams to one selective school. Keep yourself open to lots of collegiate possibilities and everything will work out!
