Hi. I’m a senior and am interested in Tulane’s engineering program. Unfortunately, I will miss the deadline for merit-based scholarships, but I will most likely receive scholarships from other sources. Here are my stats and stuff:
-34 ACT
-2150 SAT (640 CR, 800 M, 710 W)
-3.5 unweighted GPA
-Bad class rank (Top 40%), top-ranked public school though
-Not many EC’s
-Family income is average (I’m not sure whether this matters)
-Male
-URM (I’m half Native-American, which makes me half-URM I guess)
What are your thoughts? Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks!
Great ACT score, average GPA, write some good supplements and you have a good shot.

Several points:
- []Your title mentions out of state. Tulane is private, OOS is irrelevant.
[]You only need to send in your ACT, it is much stronger than your SAT
[]Being half Native American makes you a full URM in the eyes of colleges
[]You are right that it is too late for the full tuition awards for you. Not because their application deadline has passed, that is Dec 5. But you have to apply EA or SCEA, and that deadline was Nov. 15. However, Tulane awards partial merit scholarships up to about half of the full cost of attending, or $32,000/yr as the top partial award. There are several awards of lesser amounts awarded as well. You are automatically considered for those just by applying, and RD applicants get the same consideration as early applicants. As you can see from post #368 of this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1825118-admission-decisions-fall-2016-class-of-2020-p25.html you have a good shot at a generous scholarship. For example, one student (superqd) had the same ACT score and not quite as good a GPA (3.38 vs. your 3.5) and got $27,000/year. So there is hope.
Take the time to really look into Tulane and write a great Why Tulane essay.
@fallenchemist Thanks for all the information. I already sent my SAT, because I took the ACT in October and did not anticipate getting a better score on it (bad mistake). I’ll definitely focus on my supplemental essays.
@anxiousenior1 Alright. Good to hear from a fellow anxious senior…
@Nevets04
It’s not really a bad mistake. The way admissions offices do things, they just take the best of what you provide and use that, ignoring the other. They like to see you in the best light possible, plus of course that way the can report the best view of the incoming class to all the various places they need to… All schools do it.
