I’m a student from a 4-year university in NJ and I’m thinking about transferring to either UCB or UCSD for computer science. I think I’ll have around 75 units completed by the time my entire sophomore year ends that will include classes I’ve taken at my university, at UCL in the UK while I was studying abroad, and an online class offered by another 4-year university to satisfy the second half of the R&C requirement. I’ve taken an online course that Berkeley offers that satisfies one of its breadth requirements and I’ve taken a course that satisfies the first half of the R&C requirement through an online class offered by UCI (both of which I haven’t counted as part of the 75 units I’ve accumulated). I haven’t been able to find anything on the UC websites that state how many credits I can have and still be qualified to transfer as an OOS student. So, with 75 units, will I be automatically rejected by the admissions board or will I still have a shot at trying to get in?
That’s because there are no special rules for OOS students. The same unit rules apply to everyone, and they are listed on the UC websites in many places.
So, with 75 units does it mean it’s pointless for me to even apply?
http://ccctransfer.org/sites/default/files/documents/toolboxes/UC%20Toolbox/UC-Toolbox-Updates-2015-16/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart-1.pdf indicates 80 semester units or more would put one at risk of denial for having too many units as a transfer. Note that lower division non-UC units are capped at 70, and AP/IB/A-level units are not included for the purpose of this limitation.
As long as they are lower division (freshman/sophomore level, courses USUALLY starting with 1, 100, 2 or 200) they just cap at 70 units no matter how many you have. This will include future community college courses. You only run into unit cap issues when you start adding upper division courses (usually starting with 3, 300, 4, 400) to the 70.
