Hi everyone. I've heard of students that got into Berkeley who surpassed 80 transferable units. Is this true? I heard they don't even consider admitting students who went over the limit of 80 units. Anyways, what if you were an engineer or computer science major? Wouldn't it be easy to go over the limit of 80, since there are more classes to fulfill for those particular majors?

If all units are from a CCC, there are no unit limits. The problem is if you also have 4year college credits or combo 4year and CCC.

Hi anni, thanks for the reply. I have a friend who’s in that situation you mentioned. He has over 100 units from a 4 year UC and is planning to go back to Junior college to transfer somewhere else. What are his chances for another UC? Thanks.

So you’re saying that it would not be a problem for admission at Berkeley if a student has over 80 units?

Do you know anyone who did this successfully?

A buddy of mine got into Haas (transferred) with around 82 units.

@GuitarDreamer: I got in with 162 quarter units (equivalent 108 semester units). All from ccc

thedon23 and CalBear2009, Thank you, that pretty much answers my question. CalBear2009 what is your major? Engineering or mathematics, perhaps?

There’s a huge difference between having CCC credits and 4 year university credits. There is no cap on CCC units (although only 70 semester units will transfer), but there are caps for transfer applicants with units from 4 year unversities. If he has completed 80 quarter units at a UC, he should be fine. If he has over 80 semester units he will not be eligible to transfer to UCB.

According to the FAQ (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/ETS10_TransferQA_final.pdf)

“College of Letters and Science: A student who has accumulated more than
80 transferable semester units from a four-year institution is considered to have
excess units and will not be admitted. A student who has completed 80 or fewer
UC-transferable semester units at a four-year university and then transfers to a
community college will not accrue excess units and will be considered for
admission.
Students who have only attended a community college will be granted subject
credit, but not unit credit, for appropriate two-year college coursework taken in
excess of the community college 70-unit limit; such subject credit may be used
to satisfy/complete requirements.”
