What kind of GPA/SAT's are they looked for in an out of state applicant to McCombs?

I don't know for sure, but I would think top 1-3% and really high test scores, plus a good app holistically. Since oos people are lumped into the 25% that are admitted holistically, it would be important to have the best app you can put together!

How would I be set if I had:

SAT: 2000 (CR 630, W, 670, Math 700)
GPA: 3.93 uw (14 honors 2 AP classes)
Rank: 5/205
OOS

I think I may be able to provide some insight into this; UT was actually one of my primary choices and I was dismayed when they rejected me a couple of months ago--which I am no longer concerned about since I got into my top school(Yay!!!). ANyhow, I was prompt to send in an appeal letter asking them to re-evaluate my application where I also mentioned improvement on standardized test scores and desire to attend the school. I received a reply on the mail last month and sadly, they stood by their original decision. But on the letter, they explained that my SAT score was below the average for the program/major I had chosen. Holistically speaking, my application was very impressive: I had notable extra curriculars, was on top 10% of class, eloquent/compelling essays, etc. My most recent sat and act were also above the average for the school. So, I am convinced that one's sat and gpa are the most important factors for oos students. Like I said, although I wasn't a humanitarian nor an award winning student(aka "stellar stats"), I still had high grades and test scores. OOS are basically analyzed on the basis of their test scores and gpa. If you don't have an sat above 1300(as an adcom indicated), don't expect the secondary supplements (essay, rec, ecs) of your application to rescue you. I was informed by multiple admission officers that the top 10% rule in effect for hs students in texas also contributes to the modicum of oos students accepted--guaranteed admissions is increasingly overcrowding the school.

With that said, I believe someone with the credentials cited would have a good--but definitely not comfortable--chance, as the cr and m(w will not be used as an admission factor by state universities any time soon) add up to 1300.

I'm not in admissions, but it looks good to me. Good luck, I would get your app in asap though before they fill up.

Wow, I really don't understand why state schools don't accept a larger percentage of OOS kids. It seems like they would rake in more money that way.

Does anyone know when the next batch of decisions come out? I submitted my mccombs/bhp before the early consideration deadline of nov 1st and have been checking my status page daily..

It is understandable why residents are given priority; I only wish NY had a state school as reputable as UT. Again, those scores are acceptable for mccombs and with the good rank and gpa, I would say there is a good chance if you apply early. In retrospect, I feel I could have been accepted to UT had I chosen mccombs or another major intead of the college of natural science. Good luck!

The major that you could have chosen is liberal arts or education. Those are the two that are easier. The most competitive majors are business, engineering, and communications followed by natural science. It is really tough oos because Texas has to let in the top 10%ers, so unless you have a really strong application, it will be tough going. But, there is another poster who is oos who has already gotten accepted, you might find her/his stats to see where they stack up.

i'm a first year student at UT and i was admitted as an OOS student. I had similar stats as you marchballer but a lower UW gpa and more AP courses. AP courses just kinda depend on how many your school offers so if your school doesn't offer too many they won't look down upon you for it. Also, my SAT's were higher than yours but I believe your SAT scores are still good enough and your GPA should definately get you in. I'm assuming you should be fine.

Nah my school isnt really AP happy only got like 5 and the ones I didnt take I took the honors version which in most cases is harder than the AP. It is so weird, I am like why the hell didnt I just take AP and do the same or in some cases less work.
