OOS experience for UW-Madison vs. UC-Berkeley and UCLA

There are some threads talking about OOS experience at UC-Berkeley and UCLA. It seems it is not worth to spend extra money to go to these large public schools (at least for some people). Click this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=300483

How about UW-Madison in this aspect? Is it worth spending much more money to go to an out-of-state U like UW-Madison?

Are the freshmen common classes too large to handle and too hard to contact professors and TAs for resources and questions?

Thanks.

They are no larger than at most large schools including some elite schools like Cornell and Penn that have some large intro classes too. Many profs complain more about students not coming to SEE them anymore but using only email.

Have to ask.. why would one go to mad town over UCB and UCLA? UCLA and UCB are better institutions academically, and it is warmer there.

I would argue whether UCB and especially UCLA are much better academically. Most academic rankings have UW and UCLA tied and UCB ahead. OTOH UW offers a more traditional college town experience while UCLA has more commuters and not as much weekend life near campus. UW sports are better than both as is the school spirit.

A good student is what you make out of that school, not a famous school will make any student famous.

I would go to a first-rate public university at a lower sticker price. Madison fits this criteria.

Going to UCB and UCLA OOS do not make sense financially. If you want a California experience try USC, which offers lots of scholarships to top students and ranks close to UCLA and behind UCB. UW-Madison is the best deal for OOS students in terms of price unless you get a big scholarship at UCB or UCLA.
