OOS Financially practical for UW?

Hi, I’m from Las Vegas, NV. 34 ACT, multiple 5s on AP Exams, National Merit Semifinalist.

Extracurriculars include sports, volunteering, and working at Subway. I also helped start a hydroponics project at school.

I know UW does not give out much money to OOS students. However, is there any way for UW to be affordable? The purple and gold scholarships seem insignificant in comparison to the OOS tuition+room/board. I think I read on here that OOS tuition waivers exist, but are those rare and are they renewable? Are departmental scholarships significant? I plan on applying for engineering or a STEM major

Can anybody help?

In general, no, it’s not practical to expect scholarships to bring OOS costs in line with in state or lower at UW.

Look for schools where the law of supply and demand is more in your favor.

You would qualify for a discount on OOS tuition at many public universities in the Western US, through the WUE program. The catch is that the most popular and attractive schools generally don’t participate in this program. There is no incentive to offer discounts on OOS tuition when there are already plenty of applicants willing to pay the full OOS rate.

UW is one of those popular and attractive schools that doesn’t discount. Take a look at WSU instead.
