I'm applying from OOS (California) so I hear my chance of getting in is much higher. However, as you can see from my last thread, I would think that my grades and scores alone would be enough for getting in regardless of location. Do you think it is possible UW would give me a scholarship, or does their need for OOS tuition override that chance? Does anyone know how many they give each year or how easy it is to get one? My family does not qualify for financial aid, but I would prefer not to go into debt and obviously would love to get one.

“Do you think it is possible UW would give me a scholarship, or does their need for OOS tuition override that chance?”

Nope. If the money comes from a private party, why would they care? Your only bet is merit-based private scholarships. Unfortunately, the number of private scholarships not restricted to your residency and need is very small.

Here are some: http://depts.washington.edu/uwhonors/scholarships/freshman/ (Honors only though…)

“I hear my chance of getting in is much higher.”
I’ve actually heard the contrary.

I don’t think there is a difference.

You’ll probably get in if your stats are there and you write decent essays, regardless of residency. I wouldn’t count on a scholarship though. I’ve only ever heard of two people getting a scholarship (50 kids from my graduating class went to UW), and they were genius (as in turning down Ivies, UCB). Granted, maybe there were more (and I’m leaving out any sports affiliated ones), but I think most kids at UW with scholarships are private ones.

Also, I thought I’d add that Washington is a hard state to gain residency in. So unless you are working 35+ hrs a week for a full year (the proof that you’re not there solely for education), you will still be OOS, and tuition will be at least $30k/yr all 4 years.

alexzz: good point. only about 50% get in though, so are 50% of students really lacking in stats and/or have bad essays?
