OOS full tuition is it worth it?

Never have truer words been spoken.

Still trying to determine whether the OOS tuition is worth it for UF. Of course now that acceptances are in its more real. I was wondering what everyone here thought about the perception that UF is a large school and you get no personal attention. I’m trying to reconcile the school’s high ranking with that and the online classes I hear many freshman are forced to take. Excited but not sure about the whole gator thing.

@Gator88NE, thanks and love your insights ! Same also to @Zinhead’s inputs.

As internationals, we have been visiting Florida since 2003 because my in-laws and their kids live there. We certainly love the place. When my kid was going to be a junior high two years ago, my in-laws arranged a campus tour at UF and we fell in love with the school. Yes, UF may not be that known in our part of the world (they also did not send reps at my kid’s school college fair) but that’s ok. We are comfortable after seeing the school and what they have to offer. We also took the effort to submit additional requirements for international students (in addition to the usual SAT and essays submission) and we have no regret about it. We are certainly glad that my kid was accepted and look forward to our next journey. It is also an opportunity to get my kid to become closer to my in-laws and their kids, especially during holidays and school breaks.

@MomTwo2 those are great stats. No wonder he was offered such a generous amount. I take it he went somewhere else though! As for U Miami I think you are wrong it is not located in Miami at all and it is fairly suburban. I’m not sure as to the crime rate but I was impressed with the safety on campus when I visited. Obviously it is very expensive so most likely it will still be too expensive even with merit.

@NewYorker404 UM is in Coral Gables. I meant only to suggest you look at it’s crime rate as a factor. All campuses have issues of one sort or another. But I’m somewhat familiar with the area through friends who lived there, and here’s a Miami Herald article on Coral Gables crime to consider. Again, I meant only to suggest you factor that in. I’m not sure how many years UM guarantees campus housing, when students move off campus (like many colleges), etc.

I hope the decision goes well and you have a happy freshman next year!

@MomTwo2 due to costs U Miami is at the bottom of my Florida list. I am very concerned about the crime rate around campuses everywhere which I think is largely under reported.
I would be interested if you know more about UF and FSU my current top choices in Florida. I am still curious as to where your son attends college with these great grades and scores. Thank you!

@NewYorker404 please see pm

I used to live in Coral Gables, and the crime rate should not be an issue with UM.

I live in coconut grove - very close to UM’s location in the gables and have had UM kids intern at my company. I am familiar with UM’s neighborhood. Crime is not an issue. it is in a genteeler part of miami. coral gables is a different city but for all practical purposes, you should think of it as south miami with a bunch of nice houses.

Much of UM’s “bad neighborhood” reputation comes from when they used to play football in the old Orange bowl.

This post has to do with UF primarily. I mentioned UM as another school I was accepted to and loved but it is low on the list due to cost. Another poster mentioned that they didn’t like Miami due to safety which I disagreed with. I am glad to hear it is very safe as I previously thought. My comment regarding the crime rate referred to that part of the thread. Crime around college campuses both on and off campus is a concern for me but not specific to any one school.
