OOS getting in first?

Are OOS students getting in first because on the Class of 2020 admission thread most students getting in are OOS? Is this true?

Seems like they’re courting OOS students. I think they’re trying to make the school more prestigious and nationally acclaimed.

@eligarar if they want to court me, then give me good merit aid haha

My son still hasn’t heard, which kind of surprises me…we are OOS (and not a contiguous state), he applied for Computer Science in COE, with a 35C, 4.02W, and 11APs, good CS related ECs, applied in early September…but his class rank is pretty low, so maybe that is why. He has already been accepted to Purdue.

@s16s18s21s25 Did your son apply to Iowa State? I was just there yesterday for Experience Iowa State. The Computer Science/Engineering there is amazing with a whole building dedicated to that field.

One of the labs was closed (we could only look in) because there was a national competition going on regarding Cyber Defense. The college teams were from all around the country and it was partially sponsored by the DoD. The resources that ISU has are amazing. Not really surprising considering ISU is an engineering/technology school historically.

He will definitely get admitted there and maybe with decent scholarship money.

@CyclonesGrad I looked into it, but he has no interest in going to Iowa… he is fine with Purdue if he doesn’t get into his top choices. We are in the south, and as much as he wants to go somewhere with a colder climate, I couldn’t sell Iowa to him. MN is on the list because of the Twin Cities and all the companies there. His top choice is UIUC, actually, but their CS is reeeeeeally competitive from what I understand. At this rate, I think he has at least a 50% chance of ending up at Purdue and I am fine with that. We still have 8 schools left to hear from, and he is still considering adding another couple of long shots (over my grumbling…I thought we were done!).

@s16s18s21s25 A student needs to go where they feel the best. Purdue will definitely cost more than Iowa State. ISU is $29K (tuition/R&B) before merit, Purdue is $39K. UM-TC is similar to ISU.

Merit made ISU cheaper than UM-TC. Purdue hardly gives any merit to OOS.

Good luck to your son. He will do well wherever he lands. I am sure of that!

I applied late October and have not get gotten an admissions decisions. However, many of my friends here in Texas have gotten admission letters to University of Minnesota.

Also, @s16s18s21s25 I also applied to Purdue but in late October. Should I be worried, do you think, that I didn’t get an admissions decision yet?

We haven’t heard yet. East Coast OOS, solidly middle of the pack in terms of credentials, applied for priority decision on September 20.

I’m in state and it only took me 3 weeks to get into Carlson so I’d say they’re looking at people by the order that their apps come in. In fact, in-state or OOS has no weight in college decisions according to the U of MN.

Correction to my post above: application was actually complete on Nov 2. D started it on Sep 20 before getting sidetracked by school.

Timing of decision has nothing to do with when the app was submitted (does anyone read other posts b4 they post?) My son submitted his app to Carlson in mid-August, still no reply. Many others have posted similar experiences and if you look back at last years threads, many that submitted very early had to wait all the way until the end of February for a decision…and other that submitted applications relatively late got much earlier decisions.

Submitted in September, Carlson no reply. Hoping soon - OOS.
