Is Amtrak commonly utilized as a travel option for OOS students? How close to campus is the station, and is it generally viewed as safe and convenient?

Many thanks in advance for the info.

Yes! It is very popular, especially starting in the DC area and beyond. Campus is at most a 5 minute walk from the train station; its very convenient. The station is in a quarter of the town populated by government buildings, churches, and touristy shops, so its perfectly safe.

Amtrak was (and still is) a great option for students headed North since you can study the entire trip and avoid the DC traffic. It’s probably 5-6 hours to Philly and about $50 each way. I had nothing but positive experiences during my Amtrak days at W&M (1-2 roundtrips per year). Flights from Norfolk are good too–but you need a car ride.

Oh, and flights from Newport News/Williamsburg airport are even better!

There was a good thread on this earlier this month

Thanks, all, for the helpful responses.
