OOS UVA Nursing Applicant - EA a must?

Several of the schools my daughter researched/toured suggest applying early for nursing is essentially a must to increase admission chances. UVA is one of her top schools but she wants to apply RD to give her more time to improve her GPA.

Stats - 1570 SAT, most challenging curriculum all through high school (actually, a little bit below), maxed out APs, all “As” junior year, even mix of “As” and “Bs” freshman/sophomore year. Attends top public school in Mass. 6 core subjects senior year (doubled up on math and science).

Not sure which option would be better. Thank you for reading!

I have a friend in UVA nursing. She got in OOS with an SAT of 1520, GPA of 4.8, and a strong record of leadership positions, clubs/activities, and extracurriculars. I would say based on your stats that you have a good chance at regular decision, but if it is your number one choice and have your heart set on UVA then apply early decision. The early decision is a new to the UVA application this year, previously UVA only offered early action and regular decision. Good luck!

Have her do the math to see how much her GPA could increase with another semester of A’s. I can’t imagine it would be much. Good luck to her!

@bigmacbeth - Thanks. I don’t think it would be a huge boost (maybe .1), but she’d like to show another 1/2 year of all “As,” which she thinks she can do. Can’t do ED because of $, even though I know they say they meet full need. We have a complicated CSS situation.

OOS Nursing is usually the most competitive segment of the class (10% offer rate for last year’s incoming class, [which you can see on the second tab here](https://ias.virginia.edu/university-stats-facts/undergraduate-admissions)) and it won’t be “easier” during one application period. I know people are used to early being the less competitive route at other schools, but EA has always been the stronger pool (and [I’ve</a> been really clear about that](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Why Early Admission Statistics Shouldn't Determine When You Apply to UVA) on this board, my blog, and social media).

The student should submit [when they can present their strongest application](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: The Biggest Factor in the Decision to Apply Early or Regular at UVA).

Thanks, @“Dean J” I’ll tell her to continue as planned. And thank you for sharing the admissions stats!
