I live in socal, and since both events are so close together, I can’t attend both. What do you guys think is best for me to get to know the campus, people, social life, leadership, etc?

I live in SoCal too, but I’m going to both. Honestly, I think that Polycultural Week is best because you actually get to stay in the dorms with Cal Poly student. It’s only $40 for everything, but you have to find your own way there. I’m planning on taking train because my mom doesn’t want me taking the car or to drive me.

I was planning to go to both as well, but I have a midterm on the weekend of Open House 2012 — sucks. Heck, I think I’ll go back on Saturday morning to LA, take my midterm, and go back in the afternoon to SLO so I won’t miss out a thing lol

Open House ROCKS!! Do not forget to go to the rodeo – Yeah, it may be country, but it is very cool and you’ll never get a Rodeo at UCLA! Like the others say do both if you can. You’ll be so excited about going to Cal Poly when you experience these events.

I agree that Open House rocks! I would definitely try not to miss it. Admitted Students Day on Friday is very informative. And, Saturday you’ll want to check out all the booths on campus. So much positive energy! You can also find some tasty food at some of the booths cooked by students, themselves. I’ve eaten Materials Engineering’s burritos two years in a row. :)

@stevesanchezz I think it depends on what concerns you have about attending. I believe Polycultural focuses more on clubs and campus life and Open House focuses more on the majors, but I suspect there’s a lot of overlap. If you aren’t sure you want to stick with your major for the next 4-5 years, then check the others out at Open House. If you are more concerned with how well you’ll fit in on campus, then I think Polycultural would better help you decide. My daughter would probably benefit more from Open House, but she can’t make it that weekend so she’s going to Polycultural.

Open House is a little of everything, maxillarymola. Friday is for Admitted Students Day which focuses on majors. However, Saturday is open to the public and it’s ALL about clubs and campus life. You will see informational booths everywhere. You name it–it’s there. Greek life, clubs, club sports, cultural groups, a cappella groups, food booths. You’ll see what I mean if you go. The first time I went to their Open House was in 1988 and it was called Poly Royal back then. They still incorporate the name into it, but it’s lower key. Several years ago some out-of-towners ruined things by drinking and causing a ruckus. They decided to not make it such a party atmosphere. It’s still a great way to get a feel for the campus vibe, though.

Thanks, 2Leashes. It sounds like Open House is all-encompassing and if you had to choose one, that would be the better overall choice. I wish my daughter could make it to that one …

Thanks for all your input! It really helped.

Well, it didn’t stop ME from going! When my daughter was at her h.s. jazz festival (and couldn’t make it to Open House), I went in her place and took lots of pictures. I really enjoyed the Parents’ Coffeehouse on Friday night. I also liked being able to meet her future professors and find out what the program was all about. There was so much energy on campus. Loved meeting the different kids in their booths on Saturday. So, even though my daughter couldn’t make it, I’m really glad I was able to be there! :-)

@ 2Leashes: I’m thinking of doing that! LOL After Polycultural, if she has any unresolved questions, I’d go see what they have to show the kids and share my impressions with her.

@ stevesanchezz: The main reason I can think of for choosing Polycultural is that you can spend 2 days with a student from your major, so you get a lot more one-on-one attention than you will at Open House.

EDIT: Typo fix–maxillarymola :)

I’m going to my third Open House at Cal Poly (actually 4th if you count 1988.) This time I’m bringing our dog and we’ll walk all over campus. My daughter said she might be at a concert which means she’ll miss it. Either way, I plan to be there! Since her sorority will have a booth there on Saturday, I’m really hoping she’ll stay around for that. If not, I know Toby and I will find something fun to do! Got a good deal on a pet-friendly hotel, so why not! My husband and I stayed at the same place with Toby last month when we watched our daughter sing in the University Singers choir. I enjoy seeing what’s happening on campus. Makes me proud to know we’re Cal Poly parents. :)

@2Leashes … They have the choir performing?! I love to see and hear students performing (it always amazes me how talented they are). Open House sounds SOOO FUN! So you keep going back, huh? Either it’s really fun or you’re a glutton for punishment! HAHAHAHA. ;-)

My advice is if anything costs money to avoid attending. I attended Open House last year and it really felt like a waste for me. Maybe that’s because I’ve lived in the area most of my life. For some one out of the area, I would say Open House would only be better than their Polycultural week.
