Open House for New Students

Does anyone know when incoming students for next year’s class are invited to Amherst to spend the weekend? I believe it may be in April but am not sure the dates.

I would be interested to hear any reports from anyone who has attended one of these sessions in the past. Thanks!

I was cleaning my room last week and remember coming upon the first invitation letter for the Diversity Weekend. It was dated May, so you have a while.

Accepted Student's Weekend is usually a couple weekends after the acceptances are mailed out, so you can visit and give them your decision before the deadline.

Z09.. I had to laugh. For some reason it struck me as funny (and all so predictable) that you'd come across something dated for May 08 just last week! Of course, this would also be because I don't think my son has cleaned his room in so long he'd probably come across things dated '06!

Thanks for the info. I have since learned that Amherst will host two programs for admittted students (class of 2013).

Amherst will host an Open House for admitted students on April 13, 2009. This will be a DAY ONLY program.

Amherst will also host an overnight program for admitted students on April 19-20, 2009.

The overnight usually includes the diversity admittees.

"The overnight usually includes the diversity admittees."

What is that supposed to mean? THEY are allowed to tag along? You make it sound as if there are the diversity admittees and then the real admittees. What exactly is a diversity admittee? Does such a person get a different admission letter? Housed in separate dorms for the overnight? Do they wear a pink star on their clothing?

The Diversity Students are invited one weekend, and the college pays their expenses to visit, going so far as to make the reservations themselves, etc.

Plainsman: No need to get inflamed. Despite how it may sound, I'm 99% sure that everyone is discussing students who were invited to the Diversity Weekends in the fall, not all applicants of so-called "diverse" backgrounds.

Nope. these are students who were admitted and have been identified as Diversity students. The identification may have been for geographic, socio-economic, etc., reasons, not necessarily race. D never attended nor was she invited to a Diversity Weekend. However, after she was aaccepted, she was invited as a Diversity Student to Admitted Students' Weekend.

Just recieved a letter from Amherst confirming the dates for the two open houses for new students. The first is a day only open house on April 13. The second is an overnight open house slated for April 19-20. Amherst is asking ED's to assist the admissions department by articulating to the undecided students Amherst's many strengths. We should be getting more info about this event closer to April. The bad news for ED's is that housing for that weekend is our own responsibility. Amherst will be using student housing for the undecided RD candidates.
