Opening my own buisiness matters?

Hi All,

I’m going to be a Junior next year and was wondering if opening a legitimate businesses with the financial aid of my parents ( talking about a supermarket) will have a major impact on my application? Considering if the business is profitable ,how much revue should it generate for it to hold an impact on my college application?

Thanks

You plan on opening a supermarket?

Best plan 2015. Will get you into every college. Mind blown. Must go recollect pieces. Brb.

I would think that opening a labor intensive low tech business would take a good chunk of your time and, unless the business were a matter of family survival, would do more to question your priorities than impress.

I will ofcourse not reveal my entire idea etc although it has a special market segment etc Its sounds unimpressive but it is like saying how Apple launched the iphone, it was just an other phone etc but it did more than other phones. Myidea is basically a supermarket with a twist

That’s plain brilliant. I have never heard of a student opening a supermarket. Ever. That is how revolutionary your idea is. 1k or so is good for most schools. 10k should be good enough fr upper tier schools. If you make 50k, you are practically on the road to being one of the Harvard dropouts. I doubt it will be easy but it will be a very very good EC. Do your best and keep us updated! You may herald the next generation of applicants. Good luck!

As a comparison, if successful, your business can be as good an EC as ranking nationally in a sport or academically. Perhaps even more, since there is no bound (the sky is the ceiling in business) but for academics the best you can get is 1st.

Don’t waste another moment. Summer is a great time to start. We may be able to provide consulting in times of need, but I think you’ll be fine

How will you run a supermarket while being a student though? I would imagine that would require a lot of time to manage it. If your parents are primarily running it, it’s not very impressive.

@andyis Are you being serious? 1k profit for a supermarket that you opened with your parent’s money? Seems like way too much effort.

You can make that by designing 1 website.

@Frigidcold I think that a net profit would be quite difficult, since many attempts are net losses. If, after all the fees, earning 1k is not bad. Most importantly, if OP could actually set up a supermarkrt, I think it would be highly irregular and nice to put in app. Most high school businesses end in failure, and if you could actually earn some money that’s pretty good. However, I do agree that 1k is probably too little for a supermarket. What I meant is a net profit, regardless of size since I believe a supermarket would cost a considerable sum

Who is going to be running the supermarket while you’re at school? How often re you going to be at the supermarket? That’s a huge commitment if you’re the main person running it and it might conflict with your academics.

wtf… LMAO. im dead

why dont u just drop out of high school and run ur supermarket and become really rich.

I’m going to employ people, I live abroad so I would manage it from abroad. Finances and startup capital is not a problem for me.

It would of course have nothing to do with survival just an idea for an EC

Best thread I’ve seen in quite a while.

Do keep us posted.

Good luck with your endeavor. Successfully opening a supermarket would be an extremely impressive EC if you can actually pull it off.

Thanks, How much sales revenue per year would be necessary in order to impress?

In October 2014 you said you were in 12th grade. Wondering if this thread is real.

I was predicting my scores etc, this is legit. How about the amount of sales revenue to impress the admissions?

Manage from abroad? Who’s giving you advice?Even an online biz needs hands-on oversight.

The US colleges are interested in how you’ll fit as a member of their campus community and thrive there. Sales revenue isn’t relevant to their expectations of their students. If you were one of the CS prodigies who found their own companies and make a few million, you’d still need to pass muster.
