Okay so today I received some info on Granville Towers, an approved residence hall across the street from UNC. Does anyone know anything about these or have any opinions?

Are you planning on rushing? Then live there. Otherwise, it’s pretty crazy. People argue so much about it on here, and there are all types of people who are happy living there besides fratty/sorority types.

It is a nice location, but overall I prefer south campus. There are a ton of freshmen and everything’s close to the dining hall and the gym, which are both quite important freshman year. It depends on what you’re looking for.

No, not planning on rushing…it just sounded really nice and secure. I haven’t visited the campus yet, so I guess when I do I’ll visit both places to compare.

Visiting both to compare is a good idea. Here’s my opinion on Granville- everything you need is there- the Agora has the best food on campus; there’s a swimming pool and b-ball court, laundry facilities, freshmen can have cars if you want, and it’s much closer to classes. Not everyone there goes Greek and there is some diversity in the residents. Not all of them are wealthy- several that I know are on full need-based scholarship. Visit, tour each facility and talk with some of the residents. Good luck!

There’s pros and cons to living in both Granville Towers and on-campus housing. Granville has everything at arm’s length- there’s a gym, a pool, a dining hall with really good food, it’s close to all the action on Franklin Street, 5 minutes from classes, AND you can have your car on campus, an opportunity that on-campus freshman don’t have. However, you mentioned that you don’t plan on going Greek. Granville is really heavily Greek. My friends who live in Granville that aren’t Greek say that, although not everyone there is Greek, it’s possible to feel really left out if you’re not. I know six people in Granville who aren’t Greek, and only one of them plans on returning to stay there next year. The others are moving to on-campus housing or to apartments and houses off campus.

I live on South Campus with most of the other first years, and I have to say, I’ve really enjoyed it. Most of my friends live down here, so it’s easy to go hang out in their dorm rooms, and only a short 5-minute walk to Rams Head dining hall and the gym. I’ve enjoyed the events that my dorm puts on, and I like feeling close to all of the action that goes on down here. The 15-20 minute walk to class isn’t always fun, especially at 7:30 am, but there are buses that come every 15 minutes that can take you up to North Campus for classes. I’m going to miss living on South Campus next year.

I would definitely recommend visiting both places, and seeing what is the best fit for you. Good luck!
