Opinions on these potential essay topics

Hi, I've been thinking about essay topics that relate to my personal life and have influenced who I am, and I am thinking of two. Both, in some way or the other, influence my inclination towards being a math major (though i don't have to say this in the essay).

My frequent use of "math tricks" on my friends and teachers during junior year. Basically, I would try to invent or search up calculation tricks and amaze my friends with them. I would challenge them to figure them out (just as I did to those that I found). This has influenced my humorous nature and my desire to apply math/science in interesting ways.

My life as a gamer. A bit misleading, since 500 words is not nearly enough to describe my whole life playing video games. I could talk about how my 2 brothers and I used to always play Super Smash Bros. on the weekends and how that has helped to form a bond between us. Also, my interest in strategy games and eventually competitive gaming influenced my problem solving skills in math competitions.

Ideas on both of these? Im still brainstorming.

Wow! Good ideas! The first one sounded more appealing because you could combine more aspects of your personality: humor, inquisitive, intelligent, etc. Also, you could definitely apply the math tricks and talk about how that influenced your math competitions as well. Colleges want a student who will take advantage of all the opportunities on campus, and I feel the first prompt depicts you as more active I guess. Of course you could execute both of them and see which result you like better. Best of luck to you!

I personally like the gamer essay. Well probably I’m a gamer as well xD. What games do you play? But I would choose the first essay topic since its a bit more creative and appealing.
