Tell me all you know about this school please!

I really want to go there as a bio major with the premed track. I also want to be involved in undergrad research, and stuff like that.

Please help! Would a student like me fit in well at Tufts?

Your statistics are impressive and you would fit in intellectually, but those numbers do not describe your values, your character, your dreams, or your desire to be productive part of the Tufts community, which is socially progressive, diverse, creative, achievement-oriented, and inclusive. There will be many, many candidates with numbers and accomplishments like yours; those who are able to convey these other qualities are, I believe, the ones who will “fit in” and who will attract the attention of the Admissions Office. Good luck.

Your character is implicit in your academic achievements and extracurriculars. Plus you are enthusiastic. Tufts accepts 3500 annually, you are likely to be one of those. Apply ED if you want to be sure.

As for fit, which I think is your real question, explore a little beyond your first thoughts. Do you want a large school or small? City, suburb or country? If Tufts looks right after that point, then you are halfway there.

Here is a start for areas at Tufts that may prove to be a good match:

Attracting and retaining women/underrepresented minorities in STEM disciplines is big at Tufts. Two female professors have won presidential awards in this area.

Lots of research opportunities - Boston is the #1 Biotech Cluster in the world with opportunities for research at Tufts, MIT and other local labs and internships are available at the many hospitals in the area including Tufts Medical Center and Mass General/Harvard:

Soccer is popular at Tufts. There are division 3 varsity teams for men and women as well as one women’s club team and two men’s club teams. If you are interested in trying out for varsity then you should contact the coach. If she is interested, that will give your application a boost.

If you would like less of a time commitment, there is an active women’s club team as well:

Here is another link. The “Fan the Fire” program promotes school spirit and sports through the community service activities of the various sports teams. Here is an article on women’s soccer.

@Mastadon all of this information is really encouraging me to apply! do you work at Tufts? Also I really like their emphasis on service. I wanna go into Public Health, so a “For The People” attitude is exactly what I’m looking for!!

No, I do not work at Tufts. Tufts’ mascot is Jumbo the elephant, so as you can tell from my screen name, I am a Jumbo (alumni) and an ancient relative of present-day Jumbos. I have stayed in touch with Tufts throughout the decades.

Here is some more info that might be of interest to you:

Tufts has an unusual interdisciplinary Community Health second major that can be combined with any major. The program dates back to 1975 and includes an internship.

Tufts is ranked #4 for all universities based on the percentage of students that join the Peace Corps. Tufts has about 5000 undergrads, but still ranks #9 in absolute number of volunteers among schools with 5000-15000 students.

The Tufts Marathon Team is believed to be the largest collegiate marathon program in the country. Last year, over 150 runners (many non-athletes) trained for several months to run the Boston Marathon to raise money for health related causes. About 4.5 million dollars has been raised to date. About another hundred set up water stations along the route.
Hundreds of students cheered them on along the route.

The new Center for Learning and Innovation is scheduled for completion early next year, and it will house a new Human Health and Development Cluster which includes Community Health.
