I received my A.A. degree about 9 years ago and never went back to finish my bachelors degree. Since then my goals and degree path have changed. I really enjoy business, have been in a project manager position for a while and though business would be a logical choice but due to my location I as somewhat limited on program choices.

I have been accepted to the University of Florida for their BS in Business Admin degree in General Business. It is a distance learning setup with local proctored exams. The more I research it seems that Gen. Business is a waste, to focus on something like accounting or finance? The problem is the closes school for accounting would be almost an hour away and offers limited night/online courses.

My other option is a BA (I'm not willing at this point to spend another year taking calc II/physics I/II/Chem for a BS) in computer science from FSU, also online/distance setup. I currently work with GIS and come from a land surveying background and could see the benefit as well.

Anyways, just looking for opinions and advice, things I may not have considered.

Are you getting the degree just to get a Bachelors? If you’re getting a degree to fulfill a life long goal, I think the UF BSBA degree is great. UF is a quality school.

If you want a different degree to facilitate a career change, you might choose a more specific degree. Since you are working already, and need to balance work/school, the UF distance learning set up should be ideal.

I guess my dilemma is the fact that I don’t really know what I want to do. I was in land surveying for about 8 years, 5 as a project manager until late 2008 when development all but stopped in FL. So I was left with one skill-set and no job opportunities. I’ve spent the last 1.5 years at a medium municipality making half what I used to and no real path.

I’m just looking for the path that’s going to open up the most opportunities. I like business, I’m a computer/tech geek, and I’ve been really involved in GIS the last year and really enjoy that as well.

So no, I’m no really looking for “just” a degree, but to open up some new paths and get back to making decent money again.

What did you end up doing? I realize your post is old.
