What are the opportunities to get involved in bio research early on and on meaningful research as one progresses in the major? How about for biotech?

There are plenty of opportunities, you just to find them.

@Agnosticbimbo, my advice to you is if you really want to get involved in the realm of research specifically earlier on in your education, than engage in conversation with some of your instructors to find out what they’re particularly currently working on/delving into. That way if any of this sparks your interest they possibly could use a helping hand. Also, discuss this matter with your advisor as they may be able to better assist you, since they are more in-tuned with the availability of resources sometimes. Thirdly, you can glance over UM Student Employment’s website as it usually provides a comprehensive description of what occupations for students are available. https://www.studentemployment.umich.edu/cmx_content.aspx?cpid=11 Subsequently, if you know that bio-research is your calling, than consult with a member in the Bio department as they would possibly have better insight into this aspect. Finally, once you officially declare your concentration converse with your concentration advisor about this subject, as they would be the ones that might have some valid knowledge about opportunities as far as research is concerned for undergraduates.

Good Luck!

Thank you. Those are very good ideas.

No problem, and I forgot to mention that there is a program referred to as Michigan Research Community which provides first-year students with the chance to become involved in research very earlier on in their time here. Basically, you can be exposed to a wide array of different subjects and what you do is consult with a faculty member at hand so you can work with them on their main focal area of research. Also, students in this program fullfill certain requirements, live together and day in and day out breathe research. [Michigan Research Community](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/mrc) This is also a correlation to UROP(Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) [Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program | The University of Michigan](Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) | U-M LSA) which assist students in finding partnerships with faculty members to aid them in getting equipped with the proper instruments to further their research interests/interact within this primary topic of discussion.
