So I'm having trouble deciding. I really like math, and I'm pretty good at the sciences. I'm also very, very interested in the eye. But I don't know what you exactly "need" to major in opthamology. Who knows?

Opthalmology is a medical specialty dealing with diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment of conditions affecting the eye. You must first go to college, take the required pre-med courses (majoring in whatever you want), take the MCAT, enter medical school, do extremely well, and then match to a residency program (ophtho is one of the toughest residencies to get because there are so few spots).

If you wish to be an optometrist, who works to diagnose vision problems, prescribe corrective lenses and track diseases but not treat them (most states do not allow optometrists to prescribe medications), then you need to go to college, take the required pre-optometry courses (again majoring in whatever), take the OAT, go to Optometry school and graduate with an OD degree and find a job.

med schools dont care about GPA. major in whatever you want to. just be sure to get a high GPA to get into med school

Medical schools expect you to get good grades, your gpa matters (there are so many well qualified applicants they can pick the ones with the highest grades). They do not care what you major in, as long as you do well in the courses required to get in. Many premed students major in a science because they like it and so many science courses are required it may be easier to meet both major and medical school requirements that way. Bigredmed has the two choices you need to think about as an undergrad nicely stated.

sorry, "med schools dont care about GPA" should be "med schools dont care about major" above

thanks! i just hope i'm not making the wrong choices.
