Optional essay

What answer is expected from an applicant from this UMN question?

The University values diversity, broadly defined to include diversity of experiences, perspectives, backgrounds, and talents. Enrolling a diverse community of scholars interested in learning with and from each other fosters discussion and discovery inside and outside of the classroom. Please share briefly how you might contribute to, or benefit from, our community of scholars. Please limit your short answer to 1,000 characters. (Response required in 1000 characters.)

Should it talk about ethnic diversity an applicant brings into the community or just how one will contribute/benefit from the community of scholars?

Thank you

guys who are admitted into the class of '22, please put up your experience and your stats

Diversity in the prompt is broadly defined. The “expected” answer is the one that expresses your thoughts on the subject using your own words.

Hi, I was admitted last Saturday. I also struggled with what to write about for that prompt. As a white male, I found it hard to write about my “diversity”. I used my travels abroad to talk about how I have become a more well-rounded person through learning about other cultures. You just need to find something that makes you unique from most people.

Thank you for your @kaplancrunch @JBStillFlying
What were your stats, and which college and major @kaplancrunch

I don’t think there is an expected answer.
My D wrote about personal experiences she has had as part of a minority group, and travel experiences that flipped that experience, changing her perspective and perceptions. She wrote about ways she could explore and experience more in a large, somewhat diverse university.

Write something personal. Good luck!

My D was accepted a week ago- Carlson School of Management
She has a 3.93 UWgpa and a 28C on ACT, in state.

@YM2018
School of Education and Human Development
29 ACT
3.65 weighted GPA
OOS (Wisconsin)

I wrote about the academic diversity I bring. My school does a totally different type of learning than most schools in the country, and I wrote about my experience in that and the diversity I bring to the university through this way, while touching on the diversity I hope to learn from from the university itself as well.

I got accepted to Carlson School of Management. 4.1 W GPA (unsure of unweighted), 32 ACT.

Okay. Thank you @kaplancrunch @golden22. I submitted my UMN application (common app) about 3 hours ago. I haven’t received any email from UMN yet. Should I email them about the same? or should I wait for some more time? I did get an email from common app saying that the application has been successfully submitted.

The UMN website says, “Within two weeks of submitting an application, students will receive an acknowledgement that their application was received.” So, you will probably want to call them if you don’t want to wait that long. It took my son a little over a week to hear back after he applied at the end of August.

You can call in a few days and get your student ID # which you will need to activate the Tracker. They can give that to you over the phone.

Okay, thank you @JBStillFlying @tonypa

I applied yesterday morning. So would it be wise to call them today or tomorrow, and asking them for the student ID? @JBStillFlying

Wait till Monday. I’ve called the day or two afterward during a less-busy time and they didn’t have notice of the application on file yet. The system takes a few days, esp. this time of year when thousands of applications are pouring in.

@JBStillFlying Okay will wait till Monday.

@JBStillFlying I was wondering if the essay is a crucial component of the application review process? I mean, can an applicant be denied decision if they feel that he/she has not got a good score?

@JBStillFlying *ACT optional essay

The ACT essay is not a crucial component. It’s not even clear that they attach much if any weight to it. One admissions person told us last year that they mark your application as complete even if you did not submit the essay so I wouldn’t worry about it.
