Duke's supplement has an optional essay in it for the Trinity College of Arts and Science. It says it isn't necessary and they won't hold it against you if you don't do it, but my question is will I have better chance of getting in if I do the essay?

Yes. Do the essay. I did an optional essay for my first-choice school and I strongly believe that was a big factor in my winning a full scholarship there.

It can only help you.

i don't think the optional essay would save you from the dead, so to speak. and i can't imagine that it is a large determinate for even a borderline candidate. that said, i think you should def write it, if only for the peace of mind.

if you don't write it and get rejected, won't you always be wondering? plus, if i remember correctly, i wrote that specific essay for duke in like, 30 minutes. super easy.

you can still be accepted without it, so take your chances if you want
