Not sure about Julliard, but at CIM(who has 5+ orchestras), for fall placement, you play something from your rep during the first week of school and are given your seating then. For spring, auditions take place at the end of fall semester. Wind players rotate, playing principle on at least one piece.

binx can give you some input based on her son’s experiences there. From memory, I don’t think there are any instrumentalists (only vocalists) at Juilliard from the last few admit cycles per the older master lists, but you can double check.

Each school operates a bit differently, but you should be getting the rep sometime in the early summer.

Thank you.

Don’t know about Juilliard, but for Rice, RCM-London, and Boston Univ., the routine is similar: excerpts go out about 6 weeks before the audition. At the American schools, a solo piece was required as well.

At Eastman they hand out the excerpts at the very end of school for returning students. A solo piece is also required. For new students, last year the excerpts were posted on the web page toward the end of May and a password is needed to access the info which is sent to the incoming students. If you cannot gain access you can call the admissions office to get the correct password.

All students are required to audition in the Fall during the first week of classes. They have rotating chairs for each concert but there are 4 rotating principals assigned for each string section for the year. There are 4 concerts per semester and not all students play in every concert, you may have 1 rotation off, but if you have a special request to play in a specific concert it can be accommodated. The students actually like having a break from rehearsals for a few weeks.

Students have the option to re-audition for Spring semester if they hope to move up, but it is not required. All Freshmen play in the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra (ESSO), Sophomores could place in either orchestra depending on the numbers of players needed for a particular section. Upperclassmen play in the Eastman Philharmonic. Both orchestras play equally challenging repertoire and are both conducted by Neil Varon.

Incoming Eastman instrumentalists please feel free to PM me with any questions. My S just finished his Freshman year and is totally in love with the school.
